Hmm, I didn`t think sodium reacts with water in an explosion of THAT magnitude... but then again chemistry was never my strong subject. For some reason I always thought sodium was simply salt, like table salt, can someone clarify? But anyway, video has explosions so I can`t vote too low against those heh :P

^ then don't comment, 'cous this is what happens... it's an alcali metal, and all of those "metals" reacts very explosively together with water...

cool vid though

that looked like one of the old slurry pits i used to work at. if so, then it is very high in alkaline, similar to acid but on the other end of the ph scale. nice footage, but the dummies in the moon suits are missing thier scot packs, =)

we did this in highschool chemistry years ago, the professor droped a small piece into a beaker with water, it was fizzing around in straingt lines and bounceing of the edges. then added another small piece, both fizzed for a few seconds but then collided causing a small explosion! blew up the beaker too!!

I alwasys wanted to see what would happen when you throw a large chunck of that stuff into a river!! 5

erm.. i don think sodium will react so vigorously. it must be some kinda other element in the first group in the periodic table... maybe possible in large amount as the experiments that i have done only uses a small amout of sodium in a tub of water. we have safety regulations and i really wanted to try francium but my teacher do not let us try... nice teacher u got there.

i sure wan to have a teacher like yrs

It does react violently becuase it is a group 1 element, all of the metals in group 1 of the periodic table will react violently get more reactive as they go down the table.

table salt is 'sodium chloride' and is not reactive, although it will dissolve in water.

The reason why the sea is so salty is because of rivers taking sediment from the banks of rivers and washing it into the sea. the dea sea is so salty because of this, river link into it but then i dosent connect to anywhere else so the salt levels stay very high, thats why nothing can survive in the dead sea.

Table salt is NaCl, like demon said sodium chloride. What they are throwing into the water is pure sodium. The reaction isn't that great since sodium is the 3rd 1st group element, but Potassium, Cesium, and Francium would react much more violently in that order.

There is a video on Spiked on disposal of sodium in a lake. it is in black and white. Even cooler than this one.

If you drop these elements into a bathtub of water like the sodium in the like they will react more violently according to their position on the periodic table...pottasium is like a firework going off in a bathtub... cesium is like a hand grenade going off in a bathtub... and Francium is like a depth charge going off in a bathtub. very cool theres a braniacs clip on here that shows them blowing up pottasium cesium and Francium in a bathtub.

Salt is sodium chloride, not sodium. lets see someone try that with a lithium strip. heheheheh

one technical comment: "pure" elemental sodium is only possible for a split second. group 1 elements are so reactive that they'll actually pull the atoms they need from the air to stabilize their electron count.
