cool demonstration, I've been thinking about trying out Ubuntu(sp?) but have been discouraged in the past when trying to use some other unix based OS's

Now I'm impressed with the graphic abilities that were used in this clip, specially when compared directly with Vista. now my question is this : Vista does all that fancy smanshy stuff out of the box... how many hours upon hours would I have to work to get Ubuntu to do the same? most likely quite a bit of time I'm guessing.

I don't want to come off as a ubuntu hater or a microsoft lover or anything, I simply want to use a (relatively) trouble free OS. Which is why I stuck with W2000 for so long, and now use a stripped down XP with alot of personal modifications. If you could point me to a build of Ubuntu that doesn't look like crap out of the box, has some of these cool visual effects, and can play games in a proper manner please do! I am very interested.

Fantastic demo. The only weigh down is that not everyone can install Linux like Windows. When this happens, we can all rejoice and Microsoft will be shakin' in their boots.

DX10 on UBUNTU == real M$ challenger

Vista == only for DX10 games, only if cracked (free)

I have been an M$ hater for years, and live in Win2k because I have to. WinXP (stripped & augmented) is my next near term target. I will NEVER buy an OS from them, and the thought of paying for something even more bloated and convoluted than XP makes me want to PUKE. But those 8800's are gonna need new DX, and we need a real alternative OS.

All the blingbling in this Ubuntu demo certainly puts Vista in its place, but more importantly, it shows a fundamentally more capable platform. I could do without the 3D fancies, but an OS that works that well is a worthy future platform for REAL next gen GUI developments.

5/5 for the very informative demo.

I really don't care about fancy effects. I have XP, and I've used OSX some, and these have more than enough eye candy. I care more for what an OS can actually DO. Linux is great, really, and I would get it over Vista (when I upgrade my comp) any day, but can it run SupCom? Will it run Red Orchestra? Half Life? Photoshop? Rhinoceros?

Seriously, you can go on about how your OS is the greatest thing in the world, but the sad reality is that your OS does not fit the needs of most people. Most people either want their OS to be simple to set up, or they want it to run all their applications without hassle (or in my case, games). With a list of compatible games that looks like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_professionally-developed_Linux_games, you're really not showing me a useful product.

I cannot understand how you argue the superiority of an OS, when it is so limited compared to the competition.

Oh, and could you have picked worse music? Seriously, my ears were bleeding there.

It took me 15 minutes to get beryl(ubuntu doesnt do that out of the box) working but the reason why this really the beryl-ubuntu owns aero-vista is that you dont need morethat 512 of ram and even a geforce 2 can run it without problem and its far more customisable that aero.... Go Linux!

I ain't watched the vid yet, but so you all know, its the beryl binaries that make it look soooo damn good.. Its also at a very interesting point in time as vista is probably as incompatible as linux with a lot of hardware\software\games\api's lol. might just give linux a bit more publicity.

It can.

When the shit hits the fan, some guys run and some guys stay. The people that stick around while there are benefits to reap in (like beryl) ... whine, bitch and leave through the hardships --- are pussies. Luckily, the nature of Linux weeds out pussies, and when you have spartans doing the development it can't go wrong.

I don't believe Ubuntu installs with Beryl as the default desktop manager.

I had Ubuntu installed and had to add a few packages and install video card drivers, but once it was running it was pretty cool. The rotating cube desktop is really nice, and they didn't even show all of what it can do. Not sure what the point was of making those icons float around, though.

^And what do you think the corporations servers are running on? Maybe Windows has the biggest marketshare but Vista sucks and I'm sure many enterprise will stick to XP because they dont need all the fancy stuff in Vista.... And Linux IS superior to Vista: smaller memory footprint, runs great on legacy hardware, has any development tools you can think off, easy to use(depends of the distribution you choose), do everything windows do, run windows applications, more secure, I could continue for a long moment, etc, etc.... But in the end they are both good OS which do what they're supposed to do.... What I highly despise about this whole OS war thgy are the fanboys...

Remember though, vista is not just visuals. The feature I like most is the new start menu. Now, you can just hit the window key on your keyboard and type a partial name of your program and hit enter. Like window key-> "count"->enter will start counter strike. Another feature that I like is readyboost. It basically turns any flash drive into a secondary RAM. Very soon, drivers and hardware are acutally going to work in vista. And minor bugs are going to be fixed (it's acutally not that buggy right now). And for ppl who heard games run slower on vista, that's gonna get better when new cpu and vid cards drivers come out. Overall, vista is a better OS than XP, which is what most reviews say. It just need some time. BTW, every new version of window is basiaclly slower than the previous one when it comes out.

I can't comment on linux though since i have never used it.

I have a couple of questions about this video.

1) what are the system spec's of the machines running the respective OS's?

The reason I ask is because I highly doubt that Vista was running on the same machine as its Linux counterpart.

2) How many other bits of shiny does Vista have?

It did not seem as if they were unbiased in their demonstration...

3) Correct me if I am wrong but the blue screen of death they used as a 'case in point' at the end was from a Windows OS prior to Vista. I thought it was win98... Not really relevant if it was not actually Vista.

This clip did not seem to be anything but another anti Vista, pro Linux clip made by some Linux fan. Please, correct me if I am wrong.

@AhumbleKnight

Xgl (which is what saw in this clip) requires at least a 64MB video card. I have a crappy 5 year old graphics card and can run everything you saw in this clip without a hitch. When I install Vista on this computer, I will let you know how smooth it runs. (That's a joke - don't hold your breath)

The blue screen was not supposed to be a 'case in point' - it's rubbing salt inside an open wound. That reminds me, google "rubbing xgl in vista's wounds".

So, take this comment as the correction of you being wrong.

On a different note, to the people complaining about the ads on this site: you can press F5 everytime you see an add (or whatever shortcut that refreshes the page). There is also an add blocker plugin for firefox which will block them. It's called adblock plus.

I don't think I would use a linux OS, historically you spend half your time developing or finding drivers so half your computer's devices to work. Reliable drivers and easy install out of the box, then you are looking at a problem for MS.

^ "Historically" XD ..... When was the last time you tried to install linux? I think :never. The drivers are included.... The only time I had problem with my hardware was with the built in wifi on my laptop solution just use the windows drivers. And most apps can be configured with a gui you dont have to use the console...... But hey people nobody is forcing you to use Linux... I you want to try ubuntu go on the ubuntu website and burn the Live CD like that you will be able to test Linux without having to install it.

pclinuxos is one to look out for coming in a few weeks (betas out now) it has beryl packaged in as well as proprietary drivers.

if you have a recent ati card like me (x1950 pro) expect a nightmare with the current version of ubuntu, it took me a couple of days to get the drivers installed correctly, then i installed beryl (installed no problem) but it wont start up because i have composite extensions disabled in my xorg file, which unfortunately is a prerequisite for getting the ati drivers to work ??? problem with ubuntu is they have a purist attitude to open source software and hence they are unwilling to package proprietary (eg latest working) drivers.

pclinuxos is going to package. you could try sabayon which is the official beryl distro, but unfortunately for me it didnt work out of the box and was incredibly buggy (basically couldnt even open an application.)

linux is very addictive, trying to fix sometimes is half the fun and hell. personally i think ubuntu has hit a bit of a brick wall, because it is unwilling to accept the fact that the latest hardware requires proprietary software support. i see little/no use in a distro that does this...hopefully this will change as apart from that ubuntu is definitly the best for beginners like me, to linux.

Feisty Fawn( next Ubuntu release ) will include the proprietary drivers but they will be disabled by default.... Personally I hated the proprietary ATI drivers my beryl worked for a couple of day then started crashing everytime i tried to run it, and if wanted to run beryl the 3d acceleration was disabled so it was slow my screensaver was even slower.... ATI proprietary drivers suck really bad... If you really want to use the proprietary drivers on your graphic card and use beryl stick to Nvidia.

The answer is about 5 minutes. Just go to wiki.beryl-project.org, follow the directions (copy and paste like 10 things), and it's done. It's really easy, and it uses a lot less system resources than Vista. It runs fine on my 8mb shared video memory Intel graphics, but Vista on this same computer was terrible. The screensavers couldn't even work right because it wanted 128mb dedicated.

Ayle, I'm running Feisty. They aren't putting in the other drivers. The same binary ones are available in the extra repos as always, though. People with X-breakage are the ones who use drivers that aren't supported by the Ubuntu devs and in linux-restricted-modules (that's why they have to reinstall them every time there's a new kernel). They've put off "composite by default" until next time, at which point there will be Xorg 7.3 which is being called "bulletproof X" in that instead of dying, it'll go to a low-res, low-depth screen and have a configuration GUI you can use if you're afraid to touch xorg.conf that way if you DO use those other drivers, you're alright. Compiz is installed by default (but not enabled) on Feisty, though.
