Floating Magnet

It's a superconductor [a material which has no electric resistance (at a certain temperature)]. Notice that liquid nitrogen is poured into the reservoir. When certain metals and ceramics are cooled to temperatures close to absolute zero (-459 F or -273 C), they have no electrical resistance allowing electrons to flow through them freely - that's what's necessary to cause the levitation.

The floating effect results from the other object being a regular strength magnet and at room temperature. The superconductor is nonmagnetic when the nitrogen is added, the meissner effect occurs and the superconductor is now perfectly magnetic. The smaller, regular magnet now floats as if it was suspended over a large regular magnet (like an electromagnet).

They're not magnets. It's a superconductor. Notice that he poured liquid nitrogen into the reservoir? That's what's necessary to cause it to levitate. Quite a lot of possibilities, yet nobody seems to be pursuing it.

Most people learn this stuff at school... I still remember it and that was many moons ago.

cornponious, you are so right. SOOOO many possibilities available for the open market, but nobody wants to put anything out. It is a real shame, too.

Its a superconductor. When certain metals and ceramics as supercooled to temperatures close to absolute zero (-459 F or -273 C) they have no electrical resistance allowing electrons to flow through them freely. Superconductive wires could be used to move electricy for long distances without loosing energy as heat.

Explain further how having no electrical resistance allows it to float plz.

Not that I don't believe you, but no one told us yet.

The cost to keep the superconductor cooled enough keeps it out of any real production uses. I've heard though that they're making them so they still have the electrical properties at close to zero degrees celcius.

There are tons of research underway on superconducters since the beginning of the 20th century. Takes alot of research to come up eventually with consumer products. In the 19th century liquid crystals were known about, not until just recently has that technology gotten extremely cheap allowing all kinds of things to be done with it.
