Extended Crossroads (1986) Duel

A while back I posted a small portioin of the guitar duel between Steve Vai and Ralph Macchio from the movie Crossroads. Here it is in full. And for all of you who think Macchio is the one producing the sound, you're wrong. It's actually Ry Cooder.

Nice post...although ratings are bad...

This clip deserves more credit than most others think it deserves. Just because there are better guitar solo vids doesnt mean this one sux....

I love this guitar duel. I have Steve Vai's CD that includes the duel before this one that didn't make it into the movie. A shame.

ok ry cooder is not the guy playing opposite steve vai. what happened is steve vai taught ralph macchio guitar fakery for several months. steve vai did not write the song eugene's trick bag, it was paganini's 5th slightly modified; a classical violin song. steve vai played both parts, it's just simple movie magic. the parts where ralph's head is not shown is just steve vai playing the solo, and the part where ralph's head is shown is just him faking it dubbed over by steve vai playing the actual song. if you don't believe me, look it up. ry cooder did not play that song but i believe he had a hand in helping write it, but steve vai played all of it

Nindo is partly right: Ry Cooder DOES play the slide-guitar parts that are acted out by Macchio

Sweep picking, tapping, and pinch harmonics are great flashy techniques, but they don't have staying power, they are just a flash in the pan. The blues, on the other hand, is like meat and potatoes, it "sticks to your ribs".

Lately I discovered the White Stripes, and I love it because of the Delta blues licks heritage that Jack White cut his teeth on. Same thing Page did, nicked the black riffs, presented them for middle America, and he was lauded as original by those too shallow to see the roots of what they were listening to. No disrespect to Page, I love his stuff, but you gotta recognize.

Count me in as one of the white boys stealing the blues!
