Extended Crossroads (1986) Duel

A while back I posted a small portioin of the guitar duel between Steve Vai and Ralph Macchio from the movie Crossroads. Here it is in full. And for all of you who think Macchio is the one producing the sound, you're wrong. It's actually Ry Cooder.

Sweep picking, tapping, and pinch harmonics are great flashy techniques, but they don't have staying power, they are just a flash in the pan. The blues, on the other hand, is like meat and potatoes, it "sticks to your ribs".

Lately I discovered the White Stripes, and I love it because of the Delta blues licks heritage that Jack White cut his teeth on. Same thing Page did, nicked the black riffs, presented them for middle America, and he was lauded as original by those too shallow to see the roots of what they were listening to. No disrespect to Page, I love his stuff, but you gotta recognize.

Count me in as one of the white boys stealing the blues!
