I can't imagine breathing in that smoke would be too good for you either.

it would have been a better video if it had started raining on the drive over.

now we know why there is a sodium content in bottled water even. :P

but on a more serious note, I would surmise that the billowing clouds would also contain a concentration of sodium as well. If so, then inhaling it would certainly be dangerous. :P

^ We'll let our parents and grandparents worry about that one...in the past.

Can't really see anything explosive being safe for your health. Oh well, I guess they would know, right? ;)

Those were some neat explosions. Did those sounds seem added in to you? It's an old video so it's hard to tell.

@ shananay. I think it might not have exploded because the lake is alkaline and rain I believe would have a neutral PH or perhaps or slighly acidic(from pollution).

We did this in chem class way back. Sodium + water -> sodium hydroxide + hydrogen gas + heat. The flames you saw was the hydrogen being ignited by the heat. Alkaline -> basic.....sodium hydroxide is also basic, which doesn't matter because there are no fish in there.

Our teacher dropped a tiny piece into a beaker and it buzzed around the top of the water, propelled by the bubbles and heat that it was creating. We also saw a vid of some guy throwing pringles can sized cylinders of sodium into acidic lakes to balance pH.

a stupid fact: car valves have this stuff in them, thats why if you guys ever work on an engine and ditch them, your supposed to let them soak in a tank of water before disposal. then your supposed to do somthing with the water, which would be highly alkaline at that stage...

ss32, your truly a retard... Its not only hydrogen that is being released. Nothing is created, nothing is lost. If you burn a tree, what will you say? Oh it's hydrogen that is being released... errrr, RETARD ANSWER. A mix of sodium, hydrogen, water steam is the cloud of smoke, nothing less. Go to school danm.
