That can absolutely happen.

It's supposed to be "impossible" for a website to install executable software on your computer without your being prompted, but I've had one too many spywares and malwares installed even with Medium security. This is why I set my security to High for the Internet zone nowdays, which basically shuts off everything including Javascript.

For domains I "trust" (e.g., Spiked Humor) I add them to my Trusted Sites where my security is set to Medium.

I am, ironically, fixing a computer right now that had this happen. Same programs, spy sherif, pest trap, malware. Its a bitch to fix too, takes time.

Yes its possible and Dont download anything, Anything, your not perfectly sure about what it is. I find it funny that half of the people that get viruses have absoultely no idea where they came from. After they open bearshare kazaa and click on a pop up.

it can happen at that speed. i have cn it happen wi me own eyes.
loose total control of ur pc as it gets pounded.

the only way to stop it is to pull ur lan or turn off ur router/modem then wait about 30 secs till ur pc recovers then spend a good long while fixing it.

There is no such thing as a safe or secure computer that is connected to the internet. Not possible. All you can hope to do is use reliable programs that reduce the risk and ability for viruses to get onto your machine. Because they are the most used software. If more people started using Macs then there would be more viruses written for Macs. The same goes for everything, including Firefox. Use an up-to-date browser and OS. Use up-to-date virus protection. User a firewall. That is the best you can do as far as programs you use. The rest, is up to you. Also, be aware that other file extensions are not safe because although they don't look like it, they are really executables (eg doc, ppt, all other Microsoft Office file types as well as some other file types from other organizations).

Also, Stretch2000mm, since when was it supposed to be impossible for a website to install software on you computer without being prompted? Your approach of extreme paranoia is a fair enough one, but it is not safe or secure. How do you know a website is trustworthy? How do you know if the site you are looking at is actually the one you think it is?

Long story short, if you use the internet, or any input device (eg floppy drive, USB sticks, CD's, etc) then you will at some stage be attacked by a virus of some variety.

I have been using IE and Windows for years (I use *nix too) and never have I been blasted with spyware. I work at a computer shop and see this stuff all the time and its always cause the owner went to some sites they shouldnt have and clicked on the pop-ups that look like windows buttons or opened EVERY attachment no matter who it was from.

I just use FileProtector T!ME, and I haven't used any anti-spyware or anti-virus progs and haven't had a virus/Spyware for 2 years now. And I don't update Windows, and can use IE with all options activated - not that I'd want to since Firefox is better :)

i had 4,000 songs on my computer then that fatal error you saw at the end of the video happened to me and i had to hard reset my computer to new and everything was gone

Browser doesnt matter, just dont download stupid shit and dont click on the "Your the 1,000,000th visitor!!!" signs and dont open emails from people you dont know, keep your virus protection up to date, and scan for spyware regularly, and you should be fine.

The thing is it DOENSN`T happen. I have had abosultely no protection whatsoever on my computer whether it be spyware or anti virus and I haven`t had any problems at all. No spyware, no adware and no viruses. It IS impossible for malicious content to be downloaded on your computer unless the person accepts such a download. Like .exe files or accepting a download or going directly to a pop-up site to download something. People are just foolish and screw themselves over.
