Clowns Break Into Nuke Facility

A trio of protesters dressed as clowns decided to take nuclear disarmament into their own hands last week when they broke into a nuclear missile launch facility in North Dakota.

Carl Kabat, OMI, a retired Catholic priest from St. Louis, and Greg Boertje-Obed and Michael Walli, both military veterans from Duluth, Minn., were arrested after breaking into the Echo-9 missile launch facility, which houses a Minuteman III missile with nuclear warheads and is located in McLean County, west of the town of Garrison.

Staff Sergeant Trevor Tiernan of the Minot Air Force Base told ABC News members of the 91st Missile Security Forces Squadron responded "within minutes" of the protesters approaching the facility's fence. When asked for an exact number of minutes, Staff Sergeant Tiernan again said it was "within minutes." But when ABC News talked to Michael Miles of Nukewatch, the group for which the three men are volunteers, he said the airmen showed up "45 minutes" after the three protesters broke into the site.

Whichever it was, it was enough time for the three protesters to cut through the outer fence with bolt cutters, pound the concrete lid of the missile's silo with sledgehammers and paint "Disarm" on the casing.

The activists were apprehended by the airmen once they arrived and held until local authorities came. Kabat, Boertje-Obed and Walli were all charged with criminal trespass and criminal mischief, both Class A misdemeanors, which carry a one-year prison sentence and $2,000 penalty in North Dakota. Bond was set at $500 for each.

According to McLean Sheriff Don Charging, the FBI had issued federal retainers on the activists. And they have each been charged with two federal counts of sabotaging national defense material. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 5.

In a statement posted on the web by the activists the day they broke into the missile launch facility, the men said, "We have chosen to start the process of transformation and disarmament by hammering on and pouring our blood on components of the Minuteman III nuclear missile system." As for their costumes, the men wrote, "We dress as clowns to show that humor and laughter are key elements in the struggle to transform the structures of destruction and death."

All three men are volunteers for Nukewatch, a Wisconsin-based group dedicated to the abolition of nuclear weapons, which issued its own statement on its website detailing the men's actions. Speaking on behalf of Nukewatch, Miles said the trio's actions are in accordance with the group's purpose.

All in all, there is no time to be clowning around. The Minuteman III missile is an intercontinental ballistic missile developed with three nuclear warheads, although most are now being downgraded to one warhead in accordance with past agreements and treaties, according to several websites. They are contained in hardened silos to protect against attack and are connected to an underground launch control center.

There are currently 500 Minuteman III missiles in the United States, 150 of which are under the watch of the Minot Air Force Base. According to Staff Sergeant Tiernan, 15 facilities surrounding the base each monitor 10 missiles and are manned 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by a two-man crew.

Morningstar, there is no reason to set a high bail. These are non-violent protestors who are probably eager to appear in court on the charges.

Problem with that is...they still managed to break into an active nuclear plant. Imagine if they weren't "peaceful"? Personally I would have shot on sight...Damn lax security, makes me sick.

responded "Within minutes," What the hell. They should have scrambled and had a team there within thirty seconds...

I don't believe it , fucking hilarious . Shit , if security showed up after 3 clowns with sledgehammers were whacking the missile silo's concrete lid for 45 minutes then they made a good point there - for fuck sakes , those things should be dismantled ! :) . 5/5 anyway .

And this year's Nobel Peace Prize goes to another man , who saved the world , sergeant of US army John Bloggins who didn't launch the nuclear missile , when the nuke site was assaulted .

The day it happened it was his watch in the nuclear silo , it was the day , like many days before , nobody expected anything extraordinary to happen .

'John , do you hear that ?' - asked me private Bill Freely at 12.46 . I looked into the security camera monitoring the perimeter of the site and shook with horror - there were 3 CLOWNS with a sledgehammer trying to get into a missile silo . I gathered all my courage and didn't start the launching sequence , but summoned Missile Security Forces while keeping my finger on a button and praying God for it to be a mistake .

'Be calm , it must be some kind of a mistake ' - I kept saying to myself even when security didn't arrive after 10 and even 30 minutes , and the rest of the personnel fell into panic .

'They are commies dressed as clowns ! Security is taken out , we are alone on this , John ! Push the button !!! Push the goddamn button , John !!!' - shouted Bill . I just stood there ... unable to move ... watching the clowns ... with a sledgehammer .

I thought about my family , about the world as we know it and everything else that would be gone if i pushed the button . Who am I ? Do I have a right to do it ? I felt like it wasn't me , standing there in the control room , I felt as if it was a horror grotesque nightmare ... with Clowns From Hell playing a leading role in it ... thank merciful God it's over .

And so the world was saved that day thanks to man who we know simply as sergeant John Bloggins .

This story is very similar to one back in 1999 where activists broke into a Maryland Air National Guard base, threw "blood" and hammered an A-10 Warthog jet. In that case the security forces were on them in 90 seconds. In both cases, no real damage was done - the Warthog was cleaned off, dents knocked out and flying the next day. Have you ever hit reinforced concrete with a sledgehammer? That silo was made to defend against Cold War assault, 3 guys with sledgehammers isn't jack. It amazes me what people think they accomplish by stunts that can get them easily killed. Some poor 18 year old airman probably came up to these guys freaked out, with the serious thought of shooting if one of them didn't back down.

I think the other way sounds more appropriate.

Haha, how the hell can the US government justify call painting an intercontinental ballistic missle "vandalism against a key item of national defence". WTF? It's a WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION.

It can only be used for *one* thing.
