Great guitar duel from the movie Crossroads (1986) between Steve Vai and an aspiring guitarist (Ralph Macchio). The movie itself is alright, but the duel is superb.

That solo was pretty sick... but it would've been better in real time. You can tell that what he was playing was sped up. It probably wasn't his audio either... I wanna see the real guitar player not the actor.

Ok. The part the kid is playing is called Eugenes Trick Bag, Written By Steve Vai. This is an amazing piece, and the playing in the video is not sped up, they are using a technique called hammerons, you simply quickly apple pressure and release. You can also use a more advanced technique, refered to as Fret Tapping.

actually to let you guys know For starters. THe karate kid guy quite clearly faked that solo...
The beginning is totally wrong
its actually a technique called sweeping
where you hold chords but you make it so only one note plays at the same time
its pretty freakin hard.
he plays it all up and down the neck and well thats totally worng therein the beginning. ALso you pretty much could never play that without a pick as he did.
Its clearly vai in both parts.

oh yea btw to the guy earlier who asid vai wrote that. That is Eugene's trick bag, however that is just Paganini's 5th. It's a classical piece not written by vai.

The guy that did the soundtrack for the entire movie is named Ry Cooder. Awesome guitarist as well. He is the one actually playing Eugenes guitar parts in the duel opposite of Steve.

well most of the people posting dont know shit about guitar playing the technique played in the very first part are hammer ons and pull offs the second is NOT sweep picking steve alternate picks those arpeggios not sweep pick them. the faster picking bit is a rip off of pagininis 5th caprice.
