Pilot Accidentally Relays 'Hijack' Code

In the world of aviation, what's the difference between the codes 7600 and 7500? It turns out plenty of panic.

Deputies and a SWAT team surrounded a plane at the Georgetown County Airport after one of the pilots accidentally entered a code saying the aircraft has been hijacked.

State Ports Authority Chairman Harry Butler was flying the plane from Georgetown to Columbia on Thursday morning when he lost both radios.

The weather wasn't good enough to land in Columbia without the radio, so he turned back to the coast, where it was clear.

En route, his co-pilot sent a message on a signal device. He was supposed to type 7600, which means "lost communications." But instead, he punched in 7500, which reports a hijacking, Butler said.

Air traffic controllers in Myrtle Beach then notified federal authorities, who sent in the local deputies.

Butler said he had no idea what happened until he landed and a dozen deputies surrounded his plane. FBI agents and officials from the Federal Aviation Administration questioned the pair for about two hours, Butler said.

You'd think they'd at least make it entirely different.

Ooh, and I called 411 instead of my voice mail once, to whoever said 911 instead of 411.

At least they did the right thing. They've lost communications with a plane, then it relays a hijack code. What would you do? Wait until it hits a building?

Yea I ust to dial 911 on accedent all the time when calling my dad whose number started out 915-18.. and every once in awile you woud not push the 5 down all the way and end up calling 911. :/ kinda imbarasing when you have to explain to the cops why you asked if they had eaten dinner yet.

"The pilot entered it in, not the ATC, genius."

If you're talking to me, where did I imply that the ATC hit the hijack code?

Actually even cycling *through* 7500 can do it... as in you are turning the knobs trying to get to 7600... counting UP will do it... when you pass through... for that moment that you are on 7500, your tag will start flashing on the ATC screen. You are taught initially when tuning your transponder code to never even get close to those numbers. Most transponders out there are knob type. The newer avionics packages are keypad type, but the problem with dialing in the number is obvious. Same thing with the radio, you never want to go through 121.5 since it is clear channel emergency only... you would not want to stop there or your partner will probably chose that moment to make a smart remark on the radio. DOH!

Lets see, you're being tossed around in poor weather, so much so that you have to turn back to your original area of depature. You've lost both radios and now you're trying to find a way to get on the ground w/o hitting another plane.
The '6' key is 1/5 of an inch (4mm) away from the '5' key. I think thats an acceptable mistake considering the circumstances.
Either way, its a good thing to know that the SWATs response time is nice and fast.
