Tapping Your Phone For Your Own Good

USA Today alleges that 3 major phone companies turned over the records of ten millions of their customers to the NSA after 9/11.

BellSouth, AT&T and Verizon Communications turned over billions of call logs to the NSA. The information is said to have been stored in a massive database.

Last week I reported that the EFF was suing AT&T over their willingness to share private information with the NSA. It now turns out, this was just the tip of the iceberg.

President Bush said yesterday in an effort to downplay the scandal, “The privacy of ordinary Americans is fiercely protected in all our activities.”

“We’re not mining or trolling through the personal lives of millions of innocent Americans. Our efforts are focused on links to al-Qaeda and their known affiliates. So far we’ve been very successful in preventing another attack on our soil.”

According to Gen. Michael Hayden, everything that the NSA does is lawful and the appropriate members of the Congress are briefed on all NSA activities.

Both Republican and Democratic legislators have reacted with dismay and disbelieve. Some have called for an investigation into the matter.

A few weeks ago, when the Feds sought to dismiss the case against AT&T, the Justice Department said that it should not be taken as a confirmation or denial of the allegations.

We now seem to have the confirmation.

NSA has had the capability to listen to the nations phone calls for years…..cell phones make it even easier. It’s simple actually…..you have a “program” that listens for key words or phrases…or looks for certain numbers…once it hits that call is flagged. Once a call is flagged it is analyzed by a annalist to see if it has any intelligence value. I mean I don’t see were the issue is here…..no one is going to be listening to you talk about everyday random shit…no one cares. I mean shit…I’ve been to London and you can’t walk down any street without being video taped by 15 cameras…..these things happen in every country.

i agree with the fact they have not enough man power, thus they create a systems. but "The information that the government is collecting has been availible for years on the internet." and they claim they have been using it to prevent terrorist event cannot be. If this was the truth then how the fuck did septemper 11th happen if we have information so readily available on the phones and internet. thus i linked a video which i felt was the closest reason why it happend.

Seal_T5 you say that the NSA has been able to listen to phone calls? they must have flagged the calls that the terrorist made to each other especially if our gov knew the whole time?
"Contrary to these prolific claims, there is compelling evidence that the U.S. intelligence community had extensive forewarning of the 11th September attacks on New York and Washington. Further evidence suggests that the attacks may, in fact, have been in the interest of certain elements of the Bush administration''

If johnnys quote was true, then 9/11 must have not happend like the holocaust

honestly if they claim they are preventing terrorist acts, im sure you can relate to me when i say that it is hard to believe that they prevent as much as they claim. this gov is full of shit. i dioubt they are listening to my lady tell me how good i fucked her last night, but i really doubt they passed the patriot act just for wire tapping.

I think that the real issue here is finding the leak in the NSA. Whoever is leaking national security secrets like this should be executed for treason.

"If this was the truth then how the fuck did septemper 11th happen if we have information so readily available on the phones and internet."-murderous18

The information was availible and the CIA, NSA and the FBI was on the terrorists trail, but the intelligence community is not one cohesive lump. There is competition between the agencies and many of Clintons policies that were still in place before 9/11, prevented information sharing that might have lead to the capture of the terrorists.

We knew that they were planning on flying airplanes into buildings, this is true, but we did not have specific details about how they were going to do it. The FAA was informed about the potential of a hijacking, but failed to take adequet steps to prevent it. To some extent this is understandible. Ever walked through a metal detector with a pocketful of change? I do it all the time, and the damn thing still does not go off, because they cannot detect small amounts of metal, like a box cutter, and they still can't. All the security measures that you have to go through now are all for show, so you feel safe on the airplane, but the truth is if someone wanted to bring a boxcutter on an airplane, the new security measures would not stop them.

The only things that have prevented another 9/11 is that the terrorists know that passengers are no longer going to be passive during a hijacking. Air marshalls, reinforced doors and armed pilots might further discourage terrorists, and of course intelligence gathering.

Remember the feds have busted up 2 terrorist cells, that I know of. One in Buffalo, New York and the other in Lodi, California, and numerous financing operations. The Patriot Act is working, and I know of no one who's civil liberties have been infringed. When the fed starts banging down the doors of people I know, then I will get worried, but right now I'm more interested in stopping the harrassment at airports.

of course its fucking annoying having to take my shoes off to have them scaned through because the metal detectors can find metal in them. and the fact that we have fucking idiots running the security is a bad move on the FAA, those monkeys make maby 80 dollars a day, if someone came to a group and offered 5gs each, they would take that shit and let them through.

the thing that pisses me off is that as you and i know our country knew that they were planning a hijacking and that should have been enough information to put air mashalls on every plane around every major city, and increased the security.

I don't know how many flights take off every day, but I am sure that the logistics of it are astronomical. I think that if they had at least done a little racial profiling, and given middle eastern men between 18 and 40 a little extra attention for the months leading up to 9/11 it might have prevented the attacks, but of course we can't do that.

Basically it’s like hahajohnnyb already explained. Imagine the police in your neighborhood. State police, local, highway patrol…they never tend to get along well, it used to be the same way for some of the government agencies. You are right…different Intelligence agencies had many pieces to the puzzle before 9/11 but they didn’t communicate. The CIA, FBI, NSA…all have EXTREME budgets…who ever catches the biggest fish usually gets the most back for funding….so historically there was never much cooperation, because one agency didn’t want to help another agency catch someone if they weren’t going to get the credit for it. A LOT of that has changed since 9/11. You make some good points…..but only in a perfect world.
