Tapping Your Phone For Your Own Good

USA Today alleges that 3 major phone companies turned over the records of ten millions of their customers to the NSA after 9/11.

BellSouth, AT&T and Verizon Communications turned over billions of call logs to the NSA. The information is said to have been stored in a massive database.

Last week I reported that the EFF was suing AT&T over their willingness to share private information with the NSA. It now turns out, this was just the tip of the iceberg.

President Bush said yesterday in an effort to downplay the scandal, “The privacy of ordinary Americans is fiercely protected in all our activities.”

“We’re not mining or trolling through the personal lives of millions of innocent Americans. Our efforts are focused on links to al-Qaeda and their known affiliates. So far we’ve been very successful in preventing another attack on our soil.”

According to Gen. Michael Hayden, everything that the NSA does is lawful and the appropriate members of the Congress are briefed on all NSA activities.

Both Republican and Democratic legislators have reacted with dismay and disbelieve. Some have called for an investigation into the matter.

A few weeks ago, when the Feds sought to dismiss the case against AT&T, the Justice Department said that it should not be taken as a confirmation or denial of the allegations.

We now seem to have the confirmation.

Obviously the credibility is the fact that it is the truth. They have broken up several terrorist cells in New York and California. Do you honestly think that we have not been hit again because the terrorists dont feel like it?

Everyday since 9/11 I've had the exact same cup of coffee on my way to work and there hasn't been a terrorist attack on US soil since. Lets just hope that Starbucks never goes out of business.

This was made possible by a law passed in 1994 under.....the Clinton administration, and a Democratically controlled Congress. Every one of the major Congressional detractors voted FOR the law.

NOW the Dems are surprised that the law they passed is in effect?

Bullshit. Pure political play.

Good point, doesnt matter, when people start getting arrested for being a "terrorist" becasue of a error or because Alqueda dial their number by accident then maybe they will realise the price of security shouldnt our freedom and privacy. The sad fact here is that if you are not Arab/Muslim you are probably fine, for now.

The information that the government is collecting has been availible for years on the internet. Same thing with the internet search records. I do not think that they have the resources to listen in on even a small % of calls, so what I suspect they're doing is running the numbers through some fancy algorithm that only a math major would understand.

I'm pretty sure that they are not after petty pot pushers or dudes cheating on their girlfriends. We had several terrorist attacks in the 1990s, and have not had one since the anthrax scare after 9/11. I'm pretty sure that the governments efforts have had more effect than your cup of Starbucks, but keep drinking your Starbucks anyhow.

johnnyb - you are a tool. If that info that is being talked about is on the internet - give us the link. If you can't provide the places on the interenet where I can look up the phone records of millions of americans you can suck a donkey's balls.

The whole point of them collecting all the call logs is not to hear what is being said in the conversations. They don't even need that data. The calls themselves tell them more than they need to know. Most registered voters have stated their party affiliation. So all they have to do is trace patterns of who registered voters talk to. In the future when the media gets more into targeted advertising and story telling - they can specifically keep info from the people they don't want to have it. Then they can feed just the info they want to and try and alter people's perceptions of specific events.

That's just one simple thing they can do w/ the info they now have to mine through.

PyroLee - glad I get under your skin! If I bother everyone, why have I not had one comment burried yet? PS - way to stay on topic...

Assmaster, go away. You bother people.

Personally, I don't like it. They could be listening in for shit like "I hate Bush" or "Kill Bush" and throwing people in jail for that for all we know. One good thing to note though, public outrage is getting stronger the more this is circulated, and pretty soon we might just have an impeachment. Let's see....

The war, gas prices, eavesdropping, Bush inviting all his buddies to come play "King of the world" with him....Yeah, I think we're a bit overdue for a freakin' riot here. I'm suprised that more people aren't doing the whole protesting thing. I took a beanbag to the chest a couple of weeks ago...not fun. My last protest was only a couple hundred people...we need more people in America to rise up against this deuche.

Oh, and fuck Starbucks. It's a conformist, greedy, multibillion dollar corporation that is getting rich off of low wages, and shitty, overpriced coffee.

My point with the coffee was this, are post 9/11 governement policies really making a difference? Making a causal relationship between these policies and the lack of terrorist attacks since may not be accurate. A negative result can not be definatively proven. What has happened is that people are now more aware of potential attacks. So, could previous intelligence collection function today with our new awareness of terrorism?

This is just one of many firms that sell phone call records. How do you think that google targets advertisements? It sells your search records to potential advertisers. Now you go do your homework and shut the fuck up.

again haha - you lost the point of collecting millions of records. Those groups that sell that info obtain it illegally and they obtain records one at a time. If the gov't used that method - it would take them 2000 years to get the info they got in a matter of days by going directly to the phone companies.

Yes you are right, people can get other peoples phone records. But they can't go and get 10 million phone records all at once.

Here's an article for you. Go down the article about 5 paragraphs, you can see the methods they use to get those records. It's a very dialup method of retrieval. The gov't used an OC-48 connection method to get the data.

PS - sorry for being too much of an ass to start. I don't really need to be that much of a jerk to get a point across.
