Yesterday marked the beginning of the construction at Ground Zero.
Construction of the 1,776 ft high Freedom Tower was finally started after months of disputes between the site’s owners, property developers, city and state agencies and objections by September 11 family members. The families concerns were mostly about the design of the memorial.
As construction trucks drove down the ramp to Ground Zero, Governor George Pataki said, "It is going to be a symbol of our freedom and independence."
The Freedom Tower will be as high as the WTC towers, but an illuminated spire will stretch the building to 1,776 ft.
It is expected that the tower will be finished by 2011, with five other towers completed in 2012. Construction on the memorial has also begun.
