Couldnt have said it better myself. Racism is words. And we were all (atleast most) taught as we grew up not to get bent out of shape over words. since thats all they are.

I think Freeman meant to ignore race, not ignore racism, people (if he meant the latter, he meant it only in the confines of personal racism else he`s being hypocritical in not just ignoring Black History Month).

By delineating based on skin color, you enforce the idea that there is a difference between skin colors that isn`t purely a question of pigmentation. That is, by recognizing "Black History Month", you essentially are saying "Oh, these poor black people, they need -special- recognition of their achievements, apart from the recognition of white people".

The natural response to seeing someone of a different skin color is surprise. But if everyone around you treats it as natural, you will too, and the idea of racism is then extremely odd when you encounter it (I know this from personal experience).
