Why do Americans take perfectly good things from the rest of the world and change them? As if to say that if it`s not American it`s not good enough yet.

They`re called "mobile phones" because they are phones that are mobile. They have nothing to do with cells or telephony cell structures (go digital).

Aluminum is not a word. I don`t see anyone saying potassum, uranum, and polladum.

You call buttons `buttons`, badges `buttons`, and pins `badges`.

And a fanny... really? Just why? To everyone else in the world a fanny is a vagina, hence the term `fanny fart`.

An airplane is a plane of air. A Pontiac GTO is a Holden Monaro. Football is balling with the feet And it`s Wally, not fucking Waldo.

Is nothing sacred from you people!?

Yeah should be called the "Wally Ultimatum" but other than that a hilarious 5 from me!

For those who want to know - "Where`s Wally" books were originally a British invention from 1987.

Incidentally, he is called Charlie in France, Walter in Germany, Holger in Denmark and Willy in Norway and Effy in Israel.

And there looks like there will be a Where`s Wally film in 2011...

The more you know...

saltesc, I`m American and I had nothing to do with coining any of those terms. I also don`t think that the reason why we call these things by slightly different names has anything to do with american nationalism. I`m pretty sure it`s just cultural preference. We live a pretty long ways away from you and it`s understandable that there would be variances in the way we talk.

And there`s no reason to bitch about it, just accept that we speak differently. I think you should enjoy one of your delicious European beers.

Unfortunately you are incorrect about the reason for the variation, and Saltesc is correct. The American idiom of English is in fact a purposeful corruption based of nationalism. I am not British, I am not English, I am a New Zealander. English is my native tongue. New Zealand is about as far from England as you can get on Earth, and yet the variation between British English and New Zealand English in terms of pronunciation, spelling and definition of words is minimal.

The USA decided early in it`s formation to differentiate it`s self from other English speakers as a form a of National Identity. Why do you think that you spell colour with out a U, when the rest of the English speaking world use it.

Nationalism is the reason accepted by most academics for this difference.

Davy originally called it alumium (1808), then amended this to aluminum, which remains the U.S. word, but British editors in 1812 further amended it to aluminium.

And the Wright brothers created the first airplane. Where? In America. So we can call it whatever we want.

Many words once ending in -our (for example, chancellour and governour) now end in -or everywhere.

So who`s wrong here? You don`t see Germans or French or anyone bitching that the British bastardized their language. So stfu and learn that this is a different country. This is our language and we can do whatever we want with it. I keep my laptop on my desk. Are you gonna bitch about still calling it a laptop?
