This is just Lemarckism in disguise. Inheritance of acquired characteristics and cytoplasmic inheritance is about 100 years old. The problem is that anything that contradicts Neo-Darwinian inheritance is ignored by some Neo-Darwinists, this research is good for discourse but to the ignorant creationists disagreement between scientists means that the science is all wrong and were all under the constant influence of some malevolent god.

This is the most fucking bullshit documentary I`ve ever watched. I have a background in biochemistry, and to propose a theory with such whimsical evidence is ridiculous. Here are a few pieces of obvious bullshit they throw up that might get past people who don`t know any biochemistry:

- Of course something must control the turning on and off of genes. All cells in your body have the same DNA, the reason one is a nerve cell and the other is a muscle cell is because of the genes they express. What causes them to express these genes are chemical messengers from cells around them, various protein cascades and stuff we simply just don`t understand.

- The children with angels syndrome vs. fat kid. The cause he mentioned was that the abnormality was either on the mother`s or on the father`s chromosome, and the guy starts saying shit like "the GENE knows where it came from"- he`s personifying the gene making it seem as if itself understood the events around it. But in reality, a complex biochemical cascade is responsible for the different syndromes. There must be obviously a difference between mother & father`s DNA, there simply must be an intrinsic difference between them and the result is if it came from the mother one thing happens and if it came from the father another thing happens. That`s all, biochemistry.

- The traumatized mothers giving birth to traumatized children. Look, if the pregnant mother is traumatized than her body will release hormones that will probably affect the development of her baby. If she releases cortisol (stress hormone) than it will go through the placenta to the baby and affect its development (for example by making it more sensitive to cortisol) so when the baby is born, it will also be very nervous and stressing out n` stuff.

Here`s the kicker: If you want to prove FOR SURE that environmental affects are in the DNA, you need to get an egg from the traumatized woman`s ovary, and do in vetro fertilization into a normal person, and let the baby develop in a normal enviornment. Now, if the baby is born with innate stress, then they`re onto something, otherwise its all bullshit- which is where I stand on this.

^ this is not lemarkism, it`s a squillion times more sophisticated than a half-baked notion cooked up at the dawn of modern science. It`s another wing on the evolution building, suddenly survival of the fittest is only half the story. Is this just another natural process that has existed since the first organism to have dna? or is it an evolutionary mechanism that ITSELF actually evolved?!?

I have a few questions too. Can`t be bothered to go back over the video. Did they say that there is only one short period when environmental imprinting on genes occurs and that is just before puberty for males? Thus only environmental conditions during that period are relevant?
So the result is a few more causes and effects for people to think about if they choose to. Aside from that, still need to do the best with what you`ve got. That`s all that matters.

Nic0demus: I studied biochemistry for 1 year, and even at that level, teachers would say this is plausible, in need of general acceptance, but very plausible. The experiment you offer as a proof is not viable because the hypothesis clearly states that just by removing the egg from the womb, you might trigger some epigenetic switch, thus flunking the whole experiment.

You are missing the point, the apparent strength of the theory is that it explains third generational (and posterior) changes.
Don`t get me wrong I`m not saying this is true, but if they can come up with sufficient evidence, it`s worth a look into it...

I might be wrong since I have no background in the subject but from what I understood, when you say "in vitro fertilization into a normal person", and let`s imagine the baby doesn`t suffer from abnormalities afterwards, doesn`t kill the point of doing that kind of experiment if the baby will most likely get a disorder from the mother once it reaches the third phase of pregnantcy who ever she might be if something affects her, and if we take aside whatever the father and mother can give chromosone wise during the IVF ofcourse.

But like I said, I don`t have a background in the subject and may misunderstand what I read or heard from this documentary but I felt like I had to point that out.
