It`s becoming aggressively harder to evolve beyond what we are now because we are too entirely reliant on tools and technology. Evolution is the means to adapt and improve one`s physical being and perhaps mental thinking to solve survival problems. Right now we are at the top of the food chain, and masters of the planet we live in. The only evolution that`s happening right now is the technological evolution. We are only learning to build bigger guns to kill each other.

The only thing I see in the near future that we need to adapt, evolve, and overcome would be the shift and change in climate.

We are still evolving.

Superfluous traits are slowly dying. Humans are getting taller. Interbreeding is common, yet so too are isolated pockets of interbreeding humans. We are fighting off diseases and viruses, and helping to spread stronger ones. People are being born right now with what seems to be an evolved answer for AIDS.

No, we are definitely still evolving.

Now, if you want to argue that technology has stunted the power of natural selection (only one of the factors of evolution), then that`s cool. I just think that, in itself, is part of the whole process.

Well I think it`s quite obvious at this point that the excessive amount of toxic sludge being produced in the world will inevitably spill into the general population creating a new race of mutants which will make all this conversation meaningless. I think our time would be much better spent training to kill the (potentially undead) horde of mutants that will be coming.

@Silverest, what if technology is part of evolution itself? Genetically modified foods pack a lot more nutrition than food we had several hundred years ago. Humans are getting taller (although height does fluctuate in the human history), but were also living a lot longer.

I just wish there was no religion or notion of god ever...took me 20 years to finally accept it. Although it is kinda hard to when you have it drilled in your head (ever since you can first speak) that God is watching you and being bad means you`re going straight to hell.

anybody thinking that we are on top of the food chain, thus we aren`t evolving anymore, or evolving very slowly, need to take a few minutes to rethink this.

ever see any of them shows on tv, with the old castles from hundreds of years ago? the doorways are all like 5 foot tall, because people were shorter back then. there are lots of examples of human evolution, you just have to look for them. humans are evolving faster than any other species on the planet, except for maybe single celled organisms. what takes other animals MILLIONS of years to evolve, by chance, takes humans hundreds of years, by force, and intelligent selection of a mate.

the technologies that we create are a result of our evolution, not evolution itself. once our technology leads to genetic manipulation, then yes it will become evolution--but only when we start using it on people.

The reason we got taller is not genetic, but nutritional, so it`s not evolution. We are still evolving, since we are not immune to mutation. But our situation is so unique and rapidly changing that it`s hard to say what direction we`ll go.
