cool stuff but it doesn`t really explain it AT ALL. how does it make the air move? i understand where the air comes out of but wouldnt there still have to be some type of moving object in the base of the fan in order to make an air current? maybe even...a set of blades?

I love the Dyson corp and their innovations. They seem to be focused on designing things for the 21st century from the ground up rather than just rehashing the same old thing that`s been around for decades.

The fan works by drawing air in through an inlet in the base pillar before forcing it through an outlet in the upper ring. The jet of air clings on to the aerofoil shape of the ring, pulling air from behind it as it travels in a process known as inducement. Once the air exits the ring, it forces the air in front and alongside using entrainment. Using this process, a small brushless classic fan can power a much larger air outlet without exposing any blades[4].

So it`s not entirely fanless.

^^^"NOT THAT FUCKING REVOLUTIONARY"? when is the last time you seen a fan without blades? may be from the same commerical from a different site:P Actually it has more application than fans with blades, for example kids won`t be able to play with it and get hurt. If you think you get air blowing from the tip of the pencil then you are a idol.

This works because a small high velocity (ie LOUD) fan at the base of the unit draws in a small volume of air and blasts it out at high velocity around the outer edge of the ring. As this air moves outwards in an annulus, near by air molecules collide with it and are drawn into the air stream moving towards you. This creates a low pressure area in the center of the annulus, drawing in more air which also moves towards the user. In this way, the kinetic energy of the small volume of high speed air blown out from the edge of the annulus is effectively transferred to a much larger mass of air that now moves towards the user at a much slower velocity. If you are sitting sufficiently far away from the unit, the air has enough time to mix so that what you feel is just a constant lower speed air current. However, if you add up the kinetic energy in the air current, it will equal the kinetic energy of the original small mass of higher speed air molecules minus energy dissipated through heat.

Never really got why people dont like their fans making noise. People talk about the PC cases and put `quiet` at the top like I give a shit. Maybe I just have higher hearing bandwidth and can distinguish simultaneous sounds better.
