Chinese Tea That Costs $10,000

Fancy paying $10,000 for a few odd grams of tea? That’s how much enterprising Chinese folks are willing to dish out for Puer (or Pu-Erh) tea, a coveted tea type that is renowned for its exotic taste and healing properties.

Part of the allure of Puer tea comes from the strict definition surrounding this tea type. Its most prominent feature is the aging process where older raw leaves are in higher demand and said to taste better.

The claims of Puer tea having health benefits like aiding weight loss and lowering cholesterol levels also add to its appeal.

In addition to this, Chinese authorities only recognize Yunnan-grown tea as authentic Puer tea, thus increasing the value of material from this particular province.

The reason for these restrictions are largely due to the Puer tea boom of 2007. At the time, investors went wild buying these teacakes which inadvertently lead to an influx of fakes.

Subsequently, the craze fizzled out in 2008 and the authorities started implementing regulations around Puer tea in order to retain its value.

As a result of these developments, aged Puer tea from Yunnan can fetch a hefty amount. Typically, a kilogram of Puer teacakes can sell for 200 yuan ($30) but price can reach exorbitant amounts if the leaves are older.

As a matter of fact, century-old tea can reel in an impressive $10,000 for 10 grams.

Recently, 3 grams of Puer tea dating back to Qing Dynasty was auctioned at the starting bid of 200,000 yuan (close to $30,000)!

Well that`s pretty stupid. The older the tea leaves the more oxidized it is (ie less anti-oxidants). And I find least fermented tea (green or black) to taste better.

great, another tea fad about weight loss.
North American housewives are going to spend billions of dollars and waste thousands of hours drinking this crap thinking it is going to make them lose weight when they could just eat a healthier diet and do a little extra walking.

Tea tastes better than water. Hence many cultures drink it. And fucking your sister is more interesting than masturbation.
BUT!!
That doesn`t mean you should do it and proclaim it to help your goddamn blood pressure.

Look, China has four thousand years of history, but all I can say is fucking grow up and smell the scientific method, crackpots.

I drink about 2l of tea a day but I`m not gonna proclaim it gives me my youth and beauty.

how did you come to the conclusion that tea has no health benefits?
you must have used scientific method, right?

why are you so eager to criticize another culture? is it xenophobia? or has your easily influenced mind been corrupted by american media???
the chinese seem to be doing pretty well for a country with out science
when it comes to science... look at america
half of you still believe the world is 2000 years old and was created in 7 days. and you teach that in school

America has 200 years of history.. but all i can say is fucking grow up and smell the scientic method, retards

Last time I checked, China has around 5 thousand years of culture. Now, I don`t care what anyone says, but if a civilization can survive 5 thousand years and still retain and most of its ancient culture then it has to be doing something right. Even dominate western countries like Britain take their tea seriously.
