When I was much younger I saw a traveling exhibition of Shaolin Monks. Perhaps some of the more physics educated spiked viewers can explain them:

Throwing a pin through a pane of glass, multiple times (pins and glass were examined by the audience prior)

Breaking bamboo over outstretched limbs, legs, shoulders, arms etc. (I`m thinking it`s all about which point along the bamboo hits the limb)

A guy breaks a square iron bar over his forehead (iron bar examined I think)

i been breaking bricks for a few years and don`t need any of these tricks...yes if you don`t follow through you don`t break the brick and then you hurt yourself...a lot, but she is right bricks are brittle with enough force you can break them. The point of breaking bricks isn`t to show off your strength anyway it`s to harden your hand,feet,head which ever part you use. These new waves of scam artist are making martial artist seem like con artist and it`s sad.

another trick is the spacers, they allow you to break the top brick and basically smack each brick into the next.

Kat annoys me, she continually referenced force over a small area, which is pressure, pressure = force/area yet, she only said pressure once. This stuff is taught in high school physics.

Gimli,

There wasn`t really a trick. These conditioned their bodies over the course of many years to take the punishment.

Your body can undergo surprising changes when exposed to impacts over a long period of time. You tend to develop thicker more shock absorbing tissue, stronger bones, and stronger tendons. Prolonged hitting of bricks on one`s forehead has been documented to significantly thicken the skull at the impact area (one has to wonder what damage this does to the brain itself).

The pin through glass trick may not be that hard if given the right pin and the right type of glass. They key is to throw the pin at sufficient speed. Since baseball players can throw 90 mph fast balls, these guys can probably do 50 mph or so with the pins.

I`ve seen the metal head butt trick performed unsuccessfully before. The right type of metal could be quite brittle.

@Gimli

You are basically right about the bamboo as well. Unlike the above examples boobs brought up, this one takes no real training...from the person being hit anyway. The person who breaks the bamboo is actually the one swinging it, carefully hitting at such an angle and with the right force, to let physics break it. The focal person just has to stay still.

Never seen the pins and glass one, or heard it explained though.

Considering the real martial artist prepares for battle, not bricks. However, bricks are used to focus a powerful strike, for battle.
