A Universe From Nothing

This is a talk from Lawrence Krauss. Brought to us by RDF(The Richard Dawkins Foundation). He is a well known theoretical physicist. Some of the books he wrote are: Fear of Physics, Hiding in the Mirror and Atom: An Odyssey From The Big Bang To Life On Earth. This was a very interesting talk and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Its a long video but watch at LEAST the first 20 minutes and you will be hooked.

"Forget Jesus, the stars died so you can be here today."

Truth.

This was easily the best talk I`ve listened to in quite a while. Definitely a gem in the pile of shit called youtube.

interesting talk.

"the other thing that should be characteristic of science.. humility; the recognition that we don`t understand everything. there`s more we don`t understand than what we do."

yet, he uses the word "know" in just about every idea he presented..

I think you are getting something mixed up anoniem. When a scientist says they *know* something. It`s usually because they have a lot of evidence to support it. Could it turn out to be wrong? Yes, but if they happen to come across new evidence that doesn`t support it. Then they must change there knowledge. And that is the real *humility* of scientist. I think Lawrence Krauss would know this a lot more then the average joe. Just because he chooses to use the word. does not mean hes using it in the way you think he is.

I found this talk very interesting, and i loved every bit of it.

I was just curious to as he said that the universe would either come to a crunch or that the universe could keep expanding.. and I`m not an expert but my question is into what would the universe be expanding into? or is it just unlimited space that my mind cant grasp? is there no other side/dimensions that are being "filled"? If you have any of those answers or insight onto my curiosity please share..

^ not only would the universe expand into nothing, but if this happened the universe itself would dissipate in energy.
As the universe continues to expand and continually get further and further away from other galaxys, star systems moving away, the universe "slowly" dies(within a time span we couldn`t measure)
Suns and entire galaxies just drift away unable to restart the life cycle of another sun.
Now again the whole multi-verse idea, is still just that,an idea. Where multiple universes are stacked on top of each other, and has it`s roots in string theory and quantum mechanics.
String theory suggests that the frequency of said strings vibrating is what separates these universe. Quantum mechanics however is a whole different sport.
The most fascinating idea though is, how different/how many of these universes could there be. Is it based on the laws of nature/physics, (ie the strength of gravity, the weak and strong forces that connect atoms together, which are set numbers that if changed in the slightest would cause enormous change.) or is it events/decisions, like saying yes or no, or walking left instead of right, which would create an INFINITE amount of universes.
This was a great talk, but look to books for some more in depth information, I just wish he had more time.
BTW I`m an amateur so look this stuff up on your own if your interested, it`s definitely the most interesting science out there in my opinion, and there are tons of material on it too.

I very much enjoyed the whole "We come from absolutely nothing and here`s the math to prove it", attitude.

minusslade, That expanding universe and dissipation of energy is very interesting. Not just because galaxies and stars are moving apart but so are the distances between fundamental particles (and everything). At some point in the far, far flung future the EM bonds that hold you together now will not be strong enough to hold matter together.

Very interesting talk. I have wrestled with infinities, I always either 1) Get a head-ache or 2)Start laughing uncontrollably.

i watched the whole thing. this is very good.
thanks a lot Charnal. I enjoy watching things like this instead of TV (which I don`t watch, since it is my belief that it poisons the mind).

Can they make a point without bashing religion? I see why Krauss and Dawkins are friends, they are both hyper conceited wankers.

yeah, i`m definitely enjoying these videos as i just went from being a christian to atheist, even picked up 2 books by richard dawkins, the greatest show on earth and the god delusion

so keep this videos coming, i`m astounded as to why i was never exposed to this while being a christian because i clearly would have realized that believing in an imaginary man in the sky controlling everyone`s lives is just absurd when we have plain evidence such that these smart men are providing

when religion is as ridiculous as it is, one can`t help bashing it at every opportunity. he also bashed biologists (slightly).

Besides, only the smarter people can find some kind of humour in every situation.

Fantastic documentary!
But I wouldn`t go after religion so much in his place. Religion is basically the same science, it`s just dumb people are too idiots to decipher the ancient writings correctly and rewrite them into bible. If tomorrow the 3rd world war comes what would be the general relativity or quantum physics in the eyes of the humans 2000 years after: unknown words, bullshit, things to believe in?

anoniem: If all apples you`ve ever seen were green, there is no reason for you to believe that there are such a thing as red apples. Therefore you can say you "know" that all apples are green because even though you might be wrong, if there is no evidence to contradicting it.

"Hmmmm, another hour long video" I thought, "I`ll watch the first couple of minutes, get bored, and go somewhere else probably... but I`ll give it a try".

1 hour and 4 minutes later, I`m typing this... that was an awesome video! He was engaging, entertaining and made what can sometimes be a heavy, stodgy, sterile subject - into something really enthralling.

Thanks for posting Charnal.
