Science FTW, for now. See, superstition was vaguely helpful for a while but then it began epic failing. Mark my words, science will go the same way. Right now it`s the best thing we`ve got but eventually it will make way for something even more win. I`m not sure how it works exactly, I think it involves giving the answers even before the questions.

If I lived in their time I would have been burned as a witch or heathen for questioning god. Seriously, I would not have lasted a day. I`d be all like `fuck you you religious fucktards, you`re wrong!`. And they`d be like `no, you`re wrong cause your a fucking witch. Burn him`. Then I`d be pwned.

While we seem to have made great progress, never assume that myths as strong as superstition are still rampant in science today...and politics hold as much influence over the process as it ever has.

Science is still the best way to investigate the world. I admire Carl for attempting to bring skeptical scientific thought to the masses...but I do find the general scientific knowledge of the masses to be less than ideal.

and still today, the majority of the american population believes in god and spirits and prefers creationism over evolution.

consider that some people hate the truth and fight against it no matter how obvious it is.

i wonder how many of these so called enlightened religionists on this site would have been there "trying to round up the witches"

D!: Right, nice way to chastise America for very common and worldwide belief in a supreme being of one kind or another. Only compared to Europe does American faith fall by the wayside of the world in general.

And listen to Stephen Hawking sometime. He believes in God. Don`t let the implications of THAT blow too many neurons!

The real problem that secular progressives have is in showing that a belief in a supreme being has had any negative impact on human nature, beyond what our natural fight-for-survival instincts would have wrought anyway.

Hawking is NOT a theist, don`t let that blow too many neurons.

And I don`t have a problem demonstrating how religion is an extremely divisive force - There are other reasons for conflict, I do not claim that there is not. However, religion is by far the worst of them. Nothing justifies barbarism more effectively than faith because it actually creates a divine separation between the in-group and the out-group. It isn`t just race, or class, or any other mundane thing that makes the `other` different, no, it is actually a higher, divine, god ordered separation. "I am on the side of the kingdom of heaven, I am the one on the side of the creator of the universe". It allows for an easier justification to murder and steal from others that are not like yourself, and even adds to easing the conscience of the violators, "its alright", one might tell himself, "they were sinners, evil pagans. I am doing Gods work, and in the end, I will be rewarded". - We cannot expect to survive our religious differences indefinitely, especially with the proliferation of 21st century destructive technology. The undeserved respect and tolerance for religious ideology as a motivating force in a persons life must die if we are to survive as a species.

^ You obviously have not listened to all of what Hawking has had to say about the creation of the universe. The man believes in God. Period.

The problem the rest of you fucks have is in not realizing that we would have found "differences" to excuse killing each other even without religion.
