If the American government wanted to find loop holes, allowing them to torture people, they would have got it regardless of Yoo, he himself never sat there torturing the people, sure he can be instigated in the whole thing, but I think it`s rather unfair to come down so hard upon the man, I find it even more ignorant for douche bag (probly liberals) going to his fucking lecture theatre and disrupting students from their work, the univeristy has nothing to do with the charges against Yoo and nor do his pupils.

WTF?!?

Lawyers interpret the law. There might not have been any specific laws on certain forms of torture. For all we know, he could`ve interpreted the laws correctly.

If I was a lawyer and the president asked me whether he could kill aliens, I would say yes. I wouldn`t believe in it, but all I do is interpret the laws infront of me. That`s my job. Its the job of policy makers, the senate, judges, the people, etc. to make law!

Whoa!!! It seems to me that they`re using him as a scapegoat. The people he was advising (the goverment) just passed the buck along. The goverment officials that ordered it should be the ones being punished. You can`t hurt someone just because someone else told you it was ok. The "I was following orders" excuse does not fly with me, and it shouldn`t fly with anybody in this world.

I`m down with psychological "torture" (put that in quotes because it`s a really broad term). Though as soon as a person`s long-term physical and mental integrity or health status is affected, it`s just out right wrong.

But in the situation of "capturing an Al Qaeda leader planning a bombing attack on the US" , something has to be done for the sake of the potential innocent lives at stake. However, while that detainee may seem inhumane in their planning, mindset, etc., no one should drop to things like water boarding, pain, etc. etc. I think things like sleep deprivation are completely fine as long as done within the boundaries of health. It is, after all, a very passive aggressive technique not involving pain, not involving starvation, not involving physical stress or strain. But, within boundaries, it can completely upset the mind and break down its defenses, thus potentially leading to a resolution.

Some of you guys may disagree with me, but some of you guys are also the people that say pedophiles should be hung, castrated, left to bleed out, etc. etc. Considering the overall mass of lives involved between the two situations.... eh well, you be the judge.

John Yoo should be held to account, and putting him and everyone else involved in `enhanced interrogation` on trial would probably not be a bad idea. People like John Yoo who sit behind desks may not bear the same direct responsibility as the interrogator who carries out torture but he has helped to create the conditions under which the `I was just following orders` mentality is adopted and so bears a very significant burden of responsibility for the atrocities that have taken place.

However in our society, people who are that high up in the hierarchy are rarely held to account. A conviction for Yoo is probably about as likely as a conviction for Bush, Cheney or Kissinger. They are part of the institutions that run our society and these institutions are not suicidal. I therefore tend to support what these protesters are doing as it one of the few means we have of putting pressure on the system and holding it to account.
