No one can debate that this, is simply fucked up.

That being said, the insurance company was well within their legal rights to take this action. THIS is the problem. Not the lack of a government run plan which would be subject to the same laws.

This is why health care needs to be a 100% shared public burden, not a profit game. Companies are only in the game for the wrong reason.

As long as the expectation of profit is there, people like this guy will always be "dogs", an impediment to business, a loss. In the end, everybody else has to pay for him anyways, but with Insurance Corp. in the loop, THEY add 20% to the bill and skim it off the top, and then call him a loss to be dropped if at all possible, instead of a person who needs and deserves our help.

Even if we might be able care for him cheaper, I would rather we look for savings from our military and prison budgets first(drugs = jail, really?). When there is not a penny more to be saved in those places, and we still cannot afford to care for our sick, then lets start asking questions.

no one would start an insurance company if they couldn`t make money in it.

people making money through supplying health insurance is not evil. you people scare the living shit out of me. truly.

We didn`t even have health insurance before WWII. because people dint get sick? no! because health care was affordable. why isent health care affordable? because its legal for insurance companies to set prices with doctors and hospitals.

i dont want to have to pay for this guys medical care, but i certainly think that we should remove the insurance companies ability to drive prices so high, that he needs expensive insurance to pay for it.

^i would assume its the hospitals that are seting the prices. they would be trying to get as much money out of the people/insurance companies as possible. in many ways this is why the cost of health care is so high because the hospitals know they can get what ever they want of the insurance companies and then at times if the cost is not profitable the insurance companies will try not to pay out.

i pay taxes and i will always have too. at least i know that some of my tax money here in n.ireland is goin towards health care. it may not be the best system in the world but hey if u need treatment its there and we will always be above america and its privitised health service it the eyes of the WHO.

again... free health care of GTFO

It dosent work unless its everyone in a given region. If hospital A set prices too low, insurance companies would remove it from its list of accepted providers. If they set prices too high, the same thing could happen because it fucks up the balance.

see, i dont want to be forced to pay any taxes. we didnt have an income tax before 1913 and yet we where one of the biggest creditor nations. so, dont think for a second that taxes somehow lead to success. I pay taxes now, and some of it goes to health care. you know that anyone can walk into an emergency room in American and get care for emedietly life threatening ailments, right? sure maybe a guy claiming he has life threatening cancer cant get a free bed but you dont need health insurance to get treated for gun shot/stab wounds, broken bones, etc. when an illegal alien gets into a severe car crash and is taken to the hospital and stays there for two weeks in a coma, i pay for that. they dont kick him out or deport him, they provide care.

the issue with free health care is, its never free. nor would i want truly free health care. how good could a doctor who makes no money be? probably not very. the care the citizens of your country receive is a secondary concern to the feasibility and sustainability of the service. The service you love so much, is not as advertised. you health care system is almost 80 Million pounds in debt for this year.

Well Nose Nuggets - name any major western democracy, that currently has nationalised healthcare, where the people want a privatised system to replace it?

Oh, sorry... loaded question - you wont find one, I wonder why?

and £80 million, over 5 NHS trusts, which have combined running costs measured in billions - it`s no biggy.

and how are they attempting to claw back this HUGE deficit? By cutting/rationing care? introducing death panels? No, by charging to use the car parks which had previously been free, and by NOT using private contractors where they had before.

BTW, one more question.

"c) reduce coverage" - D`you mean coverage as in insurance coverage, what ailments you`re covered for etc. Or do you mean in terms of a geographical catchment area?

Either way, both are irrelevant in our healthcare system, just thought I`d point that out.

"free health care or GTFO"

OK, go to school for 8 years, rack up $200,000 in tuition and become a doctor.

Then, buy a clinic and all the machines you`ll need to practice. Expect to pay a few more million dollars for that as well.

Then, work for free!

No, you wouldn`t do that...
Health care is not free and I wouldn`t trust a doctor who works for nothing.

The report said he gets around the clock nursing care. You have any idea how much it costs to send nurses to a guys house 24 hours, seven days a week? That`s probably a third or your cost right there.

Then there`s ventilator upkeep, lab draws, doctor`s appointments. All the crazy meds he probably has to be on. Some of the cutting edge medicine out there is very expensive to make. He`s probably been in and out of the intensive care a bunch of times. someone that needs a ventilator all the time is extremely sick and takes A LOT of upkeep.

This is kinda fucked up to say, but I was thinking "at what point is it NOT worth it to keep someone alive if they can`t afford to do it themselves?" If you take this case to its logical extreme, what if someone`s cost to stay alive was $10m a year? $100m? Universal doesn`t mean free, it just means someone else pays for it. Do you and your family and all of your relatives want to work and donate your entire salary to keep this man alive?

There`s a difference between curing a person, getting them back into society as a productive individual, and just letting them `survive` as a semi-autonomous vegetable.

If we lived in small communities and each community had to personally decide to pay the money to keep people like this alive, almost all of them would say "this is too much of a burden, we have to let you die." But because society comprises millions of people now, these costs can be deferred over a large scale.

I guess that`s the reason why universal health care is desired and a more noble ideal. Simply through numbers, we`re able to keep people alive that would otherwise be too much of a burden to pay for. It still stings a bit when you think about how many people have to work to keep this guy alive, but I guess if it was me, I`d at least want the choice of staying alive or checking out.

It`s simple economics. If he goes into a nursing home, he may not live as long. A dead person does not cost anymore money.
Private corporations are proving over and over again that they are the last people to who should be trusted with peoples health care needs.

poor guy, he`s barely surviving, and he has to put in all the effort of going to court, paying lawyers, the stress of that situation must be insane knowing that you might die without your proper health coverage.
