Child Deformities In Iraq

Young women in Fallujah, Iraq are terrified of having children because of the increasing number of babies born grotesquely deformed, with no heads, two heads, a single eye in their foreheads, scaly bodies, or missing limbs.

White phosphorous was used in incendiary bombs used in the second world war by the Axis forces and the Allies. there was NO increase in genetic deformities. These things happen and have happened without the aid of wars for millions of years.
Yes there are deformities in Falluja, also in London. They are the same deformities but in Falluja they are blamed on the "war" in London the is blamed on "chance".
I know, I am the father of such a deformed child.

P.S. does one have to be a "F*cking Republican" to vote this down, if so I have erred and voted it down on its merits not on the basis of political views.

Sorry

Little information is available about the health effects that may be caused by white phosphorus. Most of what is known about the effects of breathing white phosphorus is from studies of workers. Most of what is known about the effects of eating white phosphorus is from reports of people eating rat poison or fireworks that contained it.

Breathing white phosphorus for short periods may cause coughing and irritation of the throat and lungs. Breathing white phosphorus for long periods may cause a condition known as "phossy jaw" which involves poor wound healing of the mouth and breakdown of the jaw bone.

Eating or drinking small amounts of white phosphorus may cause liver, heart, or kidney damage, vomiting, stomach cramps, drowsiness, or death.

We do not know what the effects are from eating or drinking very small amounts of white phosphorus-containing substances over long periods of time. Skin contact with burning white phosphorus may burn skin or cause liver, heart, and kidney damage.

We do not know `whether or not` white phosphorus can affect the ability to have children or cause birth defects in people.

to merely point to WW2 as proof of no adverse affects of white phosphorus & its health effects on people is very misguided to say the least & VERY illogical.

instead of totally disreguarding these people`s plights & suffering look alittle deeper & check the evidence to disprove me rather than justifying one war with another.

^ I am Very aware of the effects of white phosphorous and that it is a normal and essential part of the human body is well understood and documented.
Your lack of knowledge in this subject almost justifies your unwarranted and illogical attack on my informative post.
Please confine your comments to your (limited) area of expertise.
When you say "We do not know what the effects are from eating or drinking very small" etc. you should say that YOU do not understand.

YOU are very aware of the effects, yet you dispute that it is the cause of these birth defects?. is it purely genetic, chance or a coincidence that it is happening in Iraq more now?. (please explain).

just because phosphorous is part of the human body 1.1%, how does that make it somehow less harmful?.

i wasn`t attacking your post - but your definately attacking mine, why - i`am bringing you the facts.

on the contrary its not just me saying this it is also:

Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

so if your right we`re all somehow wrong.

where`s your evidence?.

all i`am saying is don`t dismiss this -

Alastair Hay, a professor of environmental toxicology at Leeds University.

He is currently investigating injuries caused to children during the war in Iraq. He says without an independent medical study it is impossible to say for sure what has caused the deformities and how they may be linked.

But he says there has never been a study examining if there ARE links between white phosphorus and birth deformities.

The evidence is anecdotal because there are no records from the era of Saddam Hussein to compare their stories against.

human rights group Alakhiyar said: "We have around 200 cases of deformities recorded by our society. Most of these cases are birth deformities which have arisen after the bombing of Fallujah."

This deserves to be studied & hopefully we will learn more.

Fortunately I have no need to nor wish to argue with a fool.
Please feel free to continue to attack logic with your rantings. All so amusing.

Where I am ignorant ( in many areas ) I am very willing to admit my failings.

I`m not going to get into this white phosphorous debate in regards to birth disorders. It could be a whole host of other chemicals.

However, stinkfoot, you mentioned that:

"I am Very aware of the effects of white phosphorous and that it is a normal and essential part of the human body is well understood and documented."

For someone that is railing against Truth-is-nemesis` supposed ignorance, you`re pretty ignorant yourself.

Phosphorous is a common element and is crucial to the construction of our body.

White phosphorous is man-made, toxic, extremely dangerous, and must be handled with the utmost care.

Depleted Uranium? How much DU is floating around there as dust? It is slightly radioactive, and it is a toxic heavy metal. Well over 1300 tons of it have been shot over there during the Iraq wars. Common sense says DU is a dubious idea at best, highly suspicious at the least.

Where we stand now looks like this:

On one hand, there are honest researchers finding strong connections between DU and ugly health effects like birth defects, cancer, etc.. These people are saying "hold on, we have a big problem here". They mostly don`t stand to make anything but their own wages for being researchers. They also stand to be very unpopular for bringing the bad news. It`s a guaranteed uphill battle.

On the other side, we have big interests saying "there is absolutely no problem here". These people have a lot of big money and liability depending on DU NOT BEING A PROBLEM. That includes all the big players like governments and industry at this point in history, who don`t want to be on the hook for maybe having caused a health and environmental disaster. They also love superior guns, and profitable ways to get rid of nuclear waste, which is what DU is.

So, anyone else remember the decades of denial and cover up of agent orange? We know that people with a huge vested interest in an outcome will almost always deny deny deny, and pay for studies that supposedly prove their own innocence. On the other hand, ending little people`s suffering is seldom a big money maker, and it`s always hard to exactly prove a direct link without massive funding.

We probably shouldn`t trust official answers from the big players. We have foxes guarding the hen house as usual. We should be very skeptical about the "absolutely no problem" people, and be careful not to dismiss out of hand those who say "look at this data, we have some really serious questions". Denial of a problem does not invalidate proof of that problem.

How many of these scenarios have to play out before we learn not to trust the denials of big vested interests. Give it 50 years for history to make it obvious, and we might have a better idea of the truth. Until then DU has to be highly suspect.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depleted_uranium

Some things we shouldn`t dismiss too quickly:

In a three week period of conflict in Iraq during 2003 it was estimated over 1000 tons of depleted uranium munitions were used, mostly in cities.

Human epidemiological evidence is consistent with increased risk of birth defects in the offspring of persons exposed to DU. A 2001 study of 15,000 February 1991 U.S. Gulf War combat veterans and 15,000 control veterans found that the Gulf War veterans were 1.8 (fathers) to 2.8 (mothers) times more likely to have children with birth defects. After examination of children`s medical records two years later, the birth defect rate increased by more than 20%:
"Dr. Kang found that male Gulf War veterans reported having infants with likely birth defects at twice the rate of non-veterans. Furthermore, female Gulf War veterans were almost three times more likely to report children with birth defects than their non-Gulf counterparts. The numbers changed somewhat with medical records verification. However, Dr. Kang and his colleagues concluded that the risk of birth defects in children of deployed male veterans still was about 2.2 times that of non-deployed veterans."

U.S. DoD studies using cultured cells and laboratory rodents continue to suggest the possibility of leukemogenic, genetic, reproductive, and neurological effects from chronic exposure.

A 2005 epidemiology review concluded: "In aggregate the human epidemiological evidence is consistent with increased risk of birth defects in offspring of persons exposed to DU."

I heard being around, breathing, depleted uranium residue is as bad for your health as eating 25 big-macs a day. Radioactive big macs, that is.

But really, war is messy, I am sure we sort of kind of used some weapons that aren`t really all that nice to civilians in the long run. But hey: At least those deformed babies are living in a country of freedom and democracy! Not? Oh. Well.. sucks pretty hard to be an Iraqi then. Pretty fucking hard. :(

Or it could be directly caused by the stress of living in a warzone, or the results of some monstrous experiment, or space fairys. Will anyone other than viewer hungry media spend any time and money on it?, that is the question.
