The health insurance industry made up a fake study, to try and derail Max Baucus` insurance-company-reach-around bill, because they didn`t get everything that they wanted, but throwing money at them and kindly asking them to stop fucking people over is supposed to work, without a competitor that doesn`t put a 1/3rd of your money in their pocket, especially since they inexplicably have exemption to anti-monopoly laws?

There in lies the truth nobody seems to talk about. "Exemption to anti-monopoly laws". If Republicans truely believed in the free market, they`d be all over that. Even if it is "unofficial and off the books" policy.

Lets emagine for a second that Federal law did not give the Unites States Postal Service a monopoly on letter mail. not many people are aware, but it is illigal for a 3rd party company to deliver letter mail the way the USPS does. packages and parcals are a different case.

so, tomorrow UPS and FedEx can start issuing fedex/ups stamps and collecting/delivering letter mail. The difference is these 3rd parties would have to sell stamps for $2.50 a piece instead of $0.47 or what ever stamps cost right now as thats the actual cost to deliver a piece of letter mail.

the reason its not immediately apparent that this is the effective cost of the service the USPS provides is because the face cost of a stamp is 47 cents, not two fifty. What a lot of people don`t know is that the USPS has been over budget every year for as long as i can remember. we are not even done with fiscal 09 and they are already 7-9 Billion (with a B) in the red. so, you buy a 47 cent stamp but they take the two dollars from your taxes to make up the difference.

this is questionable business on two fronts. one, it creates the illusion that the service is cheaper then it is. and two, you penalize people who might not even use the USPS by taking their tax dollars to make up the difference.

switch back to the insurance debate now. if the government provides a health care service that runs a deficit every year because the amount of money people using the service pay cant actually pay for 100% of the services garnered; how is that competition?

this is more comparative then most might think as Medicare, the existing public option, is already like the USPS. they run a deficit every year. if you use the 2008 deficit as an example we will clear out the entire medicare overflow fund by 2017 with just the current users, never mind the 47 million people who dont have insurance now, but would qualify with this public option.
