10/GUI

"10/GUI is probably one of the most dramatic reimaginations of the desktop user interface I’ve seen in a long time. This concept proposes a multitouch interaction system that does not require a multitouch screen (and thus does not have to deal with all the problems such a screen causes), but instead uses a multitouch area near the keyboard. The proposed graphical user interface makes full use of this multitouch area. Watch the video, it’s definitely worth your time (of course, some people disagree ?)."

Oh, hell YES please!
I currently will not own a full touchscreen phone because of one issue they outline- your own damn fingers get in the way of what you`re trying to touch; hence I`m all for QWERTY sliders like the Xperia X2.
Everything else mentioned to do with that touch panel makes complete sense too, even the UI looks straightforward but well thought out.

Needless to say it`d take a bit of getting used to, but could be extremely slick once fluent.

However, one thing I can see being a problem is that last image with the keyboard being above the touch-panel; you`d have to rest on the panel and it`s a bit bulky...

4.92 out of 5. Not bad for an video that starts off with the obvious fatal flaws about "surface" computing. Last time that topic came up I got voted down for saying exactly all the same things. They forgot one though: dirty hands on a display quality optical surface. I smack anyone who touches my monitor with their nose nugget excavators or asscrack sample swabs.

^But you let them touch your mouse won`t you. I laughed at your last sentence though.

Very interesting watch.
I thought of one potentially major improvement/augmentation over the design that was outlined.
Rather than supplement the keyboard with an "improved" secondary interface, why not replace them both in the same hardware. Since the interface has shown the capacity for variable and concurrent input (it can switch modes) couldn`t it also act as a keyboard? Have the same technology out-lined in place only you add a third "button" to the top. When this third "button" is pressed the it enters "keyboard mode". In this mode a simple LCD out-line of a standard QWERTY would appear on/in the touch surface. Once fully in "keyboard mode" you can use this mode as you would a normal keyboard, just type away.

There are obvious flaws to this idea namely: The lack of tactile feed-back resulting in keyboard staring. Programs (mostly games) that require both mouse and KB interface (I do have a solution for this). Potential alignment issues since the KB design would require a static points whereas the 10GUI is much like the mouse, relative.

Things that utilize touch are starting to become pretty impressive, but it`s going to be very hard to replace actual tactile devices with touch devices. With tactile devices once you become familiar enough with it you rarely need any sort confirmation that you are hitting the right button because you can feel what you are pressing, with touch devices you will ALWAYS need some sort of confirmation that you are hitting the right area.

I think rather that trying to create something to replace the traditional mouse, they should be trying to make something to augment it. Like you can normally use the mouse in its typical fashion, but just have it on a touch pad so if you want to you can do multitouch operations too.

the question is, how can this technology be applied to porn.

desks would seemingly need to be redesigned with this kind of keyboard in mind. That`s my 2 cents.

Touch is great, but where in the fuck is my keyboard?

Seriously they need a touchpad/mouse interective replacement, that uses 1 hand. That would be cool.

I can`t see this replacing a keyboard, and if it can`t replace a kayboard then it is prime #1 USELESS.

@Arcturus519

did you even get to the end of the video?

there is no attempt to replace the keyboard, rather this supplements it.

The answer is very simple for these guys. Two smaller multi touch screens that flank each side of the keyboard. Problem solved and very easy to use. Go ahead try imagining it with your own keyboard infromt of you right now.

Did anybody else notice that one of the major complaints about a windows based system, that everything is "in a pile on the desktop", is addressed by the task bar? I mean honestly, I have a dual monitor setup and I typically have several windows strewn about both screens but I never get lost because everything is in order of opening right on the task bar. And Vista also include little thumbnails to go along with the text description.

Also, @incognito1 You`re an idiot.
