Anyone who uses the term "missing link" is pretty well showing themselves to be ignorant of what the fossil record is.

I`d give David Attenborough the benefit of the doubt, as I suspect he was probably edited to hell from a much longer answer.

However, great video that points out how complete the fossil record already is, and that we already predicted we would find IDA before we did, thus proving evolution correct once again.

Also, this weird looking dude just blew my mind on the abiogenesis front... I need to to track that story down.

They`re all missing links but this one is unique in that it shattered a lot of assumptions we`ve made about our evolution.

What we knew is that we shared a common ancestor with chimps many million years ago. we split and we began walking while the chimps stayed in the trees.

What we assumed is that chimps are closer to the ancient common ancestor than we are particularly when it comes to climbing trees. We assumed that they had chimp like feet and hands and primarily climbed trees. Ida changed that.

Ida`s feet are suited for walking on land as well as climbing where as chimps are specialized for tree climbing and ours are specialized for bipedal walking. It`s pelvic region is a mix of bipedal and chimp like bone structure. But idea is relatively close to the common ancestor we share with chimps. It suggests that maybe the common ancestor had feet more similar to our own and was much more land based than we assumed.

One of the scientists who made the discovery suggests that in some aspects (particularly in movement)The common ancestor may be more similar to us than they are to chimps. So chimps feet evolved after and the common ancestor didn`t have them. Also, there are suggestions based on her skeleton that Ida would be a much more social creature like us and Banobos and not aggressive in their lifestyle like chimps. I don`t kno the logic but it`s usually based on comparative anatomy and educated guesses.

Kinda neat. A lot of what we knew about where we came from went out the window so it`s not the FINAL missing link but it`s certainly a very solid link in the chain.

Chuckus,

I could be wrong here but I think you might have your fossils mixed up.

From your description of the partially bipedal pelvis, I think you may be talking about "Ardi", who is a very new find that predates Lucy by 1 million years or so.

Ida is 47 Million Years old and predates Both Humans and Chimps by a long shot.

Dont EVER argue with David Attenborough.

He is always right, and should have the full support of Spiked who always vote him 5/5!

I also don`t trust men with long hair...
