KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- A woman was killed Saturday afternoon when she was dragged under a car driven by her son.
Kissimmee police said the incident happened at about 4:30 p.m. at Massy Court in Bordeaux Road.
Crash investigator Frederick Hall said 12-year-old Julian Matta was sitting in the driver's seat of a 2008 Dodge van in the driveway of 810 Massy Court when he asked his mother's permission to put the car in gear. Another woman, identified as 58-year-old Nayda Cruz, was sitting in the van's passenger seat.
Witnesses said the mother, identified as 34-year-old Mayra Leader, gave the boy permission. That's when the van suddenly traveled in reverse, causing Leader to become trapped between the open driver's door and the driver's seat.
Officials said the van dragged Leader into the roadway and crashed into the rear of neighbor's parked car. As a result of the collision, the parked car was pushed forward toward the garage door of the neighbor's house.
Leader died at the Osceola Regional Medical Center Saturday night.
Police are investigating the crash.
