^ My guess would be because it shows he is blind to the rest of the world that would perceive him to be otherwise. His echo locator trick is not going to get him down lets say a busy street. Just think of how many times you dodge shoulders walking down the street or at the shopping mall. To a blind person not expecting it, it would knock them to the ground. I also imagine it would be pretty hard to locate narrow things like poles or even the end of the sidewalk/curb.
