Great post truth.

Spent a few days in solitary once. What they don`t mention here is that sensory deprivation isn`t all or nothing, there are many shades of gray. Their experiment was tuned to test an extreme, but longer term partial deprivation below some threshold is also hard and damaging. What made my time totally fine was simple: a few good books, I love to read. I had an extended reading break, no interruptions, slept all I wanted, read all I wanted. The food sucked, but I didn`t have to cook and clean. The scenery was bland, but when you`re reading a good book you don`t care so much.

Solitary confinement is extreme torture, no ifs ands or buts. I think it should be mandatory that jails provide BOTH a minimum of three books a week AND TV with a few channels for anyone in solitary. And maybe free consignment learning courses for anyone who will ever be eligible to get out. Anything that gives you something to work with to keep your mind alive, plus the sense of purpose from education.

Just look at that poor guy who spent years in the hole when he was innocent, he had NOTHING and it broke his mind. We can`t pay him back for hell like that. We don`t know the reality of the shit we dish out, and yet we keep dishing it. It`s not OK.

Horizon programmes are always interesting and thought provoking.

This episode is no exception.

Thanks for the upload, I missed it when it was originally shown on TV.

Definitely worth watching.
I actually wrote a psychology paper based on this show and of course sensory deprivation. I burned this for my prof and now she shows it in all her Intro Psych classes.

what would happen with many of those senses withheld from birth? i mean, we all know about helen keller. her sense of touch was heightened. would there be telekinetic capability possible if no other senses are available?

also, did anyone see the rat brain cells that fused with the flight sim? i wonder if similar applications are possible with the human brain.

The torture only comes in because were so conditioned in the ways of modern society. Were have learned to be constantly on the go and constantly working, bombarded with all kinds of stimuli. An active mind cant cope well with the sudden deprivemnt of stimuli.

Its kinda of sad really, were like hyper active kids that cant sit still....well internally anyway. I bet if we would put someone in isolation who hasnt been exposed to modern society he or she would cope much better.

They didn`t mention the volunteers getting anything to eat or drink, but I`m guessing they must have had something. I wonder how they planned to have them eat or drink with those huge arm covers on lol.

I wonder what would happen to people who are forced with extreme sensory input.
