They are uneducated backwards thinking racists and bigots and follow like minded people, hence Glen Beck`s and Limbaugh`s ratings. It`s a reflection of the depressing ignorance of America and you lap it up like some sort of victory. Quite sad really.

No, Thorkon, I think TechHead is right, more so about Beck than Limbaugh, but still. However, that`s not exactly the whole story. Prior to the `08 election, "Independent" was a banner usually carried by the members of five completely different groups:

1) Moderates - The kind of people who got the Blue Dogs elected. People who may oppose abortion and gun regulation, but who are religious enough to appreciate the messages about shared social responsibility in the bible.

2+3) The fringes of either party - i.e. the Socialists on the Left, and the Libertarians on the Right. They`d usually vote with the closest major party, but wouldn`t register with that party or identify with them in polls.

4) The Extreme Left - i.e. people like the eco-terrorists.

5) The Extreme Right - Secessionists and the like. I know a lot of Secessionists would claim that they`re actually Libertarians, but the reality is, you show me 10 Secessionists, I`ll show you 9.5 bigots. We`re talking about salt of the earth, hard-working people, who mean well and have good hearts but aren`t very well educated and tend to scapegoat minorities for their restricted advancement in society primarily because it`s an easy thing to do, as opposed to, say, examining the widening gap between rich and poor and the shrinking middle class. Their ranks have swelled with the election of Barack Obama and the appointment of Michael Steele. I would contend that these types of people constitute the majority of Glen Beck`s audience. Beck`s flagrant race-bating and unfounded conspiracy theories play well with this type of person. They`re entranced by his use of "smart" sounding terms, without really understanding what they mean. Also, let`s remember that Beck`s show comes on at 5pm. Very few productive members of society are home watching TV at 5pm. Most people are either just getting off of work or are in transit. Involved parents are usually tied up with after school activities for their kids. People who work the 3rd shit are sleeping.

If you`re already home and watching TV at 5pm, chances are you`re either a college student, or someone who really isn`t doing much with their life like the folks in group #5.

Yes, I realize that a lot of the above is conjecture, but it`s still 100 more reasoned than anything Beck puts forward (though that is setting the bar pretty low). People who get all riled up by sound-bytes that rhyme and think that half-assed acronyms that may, or may not, be spelled correctly, are valid forms of political discourse are exactly the kinds of people that make up Glen Beck`s target audience. They may call themselves "Independents" but that`s only because the more apt terms are far more vulgar.
