It turned out to be a family business.
Gary Nisbit and Randy Joubert discovered they were brothers after working side by side for the same furniture delivery company in Maine. While Nesbit has worked for the Waldoboro company for seven years, Joubert joined the business this summer, according to a report on WCSH-TV. Both were adopted at birth.
When a state law allowing adopted children to obtain their birth certificates became effective Jan. 1, Joubert began researching his family history. Although he learned that both his biological parents had died, he found out that they had bore another son, born on June 10, 1974, Villagesoup.com reported.
Meanwhile, customers often told the men that they looked like brothers when they made furniture deliveries. But in August, after yet another remark about their resemblance, a light went off in Joubert's head, and he began asking Nisbit some questions, the Bangor Daily News reported.
"As soon as he said his birthday I knew," Joubert told Villagesoup.com.
Nisbit called the discovery "phenomenal." The men were born a year apart, grew up in neighboring towns and attended rival schools.
And the family serendipity didn't end there.
Joanne Campbell showed up at the brothers' workplace last week, with her birth certificate in her hand and tears in her eyes. She is Gary and Randy's half-sister, born to the same mother five and six years before the two men.
"I'm really awestruck," Campbell told the Bangor Daily News. "After all of these years, here I am 41 and now I finally found my brothers."
