I`m all for improving and developing new tech and all that, but at what cost are we doing so? Look at kids and teens now-what`s it going to be like for our children? Inability to communicate in a real life social environment? Probably.

We`ve -been- slaves to tools and technology for a very, very long time now. It all started with stone tools, and they`ve been advancing ever since.

I`m typing to you from my keyboard. Prior to that, I would have used a typewriter. Before that, pen to paper. Prior to that, quill to parchment. Before that, a pressing tool to use on soft clay (which would be baked). Before that, it may have been carved with chisel and stone. Prior to that it would have been pigment/spit on a rock surface.

We, like many animals, use tools and develop better technology. We find better materials, moving our way through metals, woods, plastics, and graphite epoxy composites.

Try living without your cell phone for a year; you`ll live, it`ll be a fairly subpar year where people will find you a bit hard to reach but overall it`ll be a livable life.

Now try living without your clothes for a year; you`ll lose your job and pretty much all your friends who`ll shun you as a crazy person, then you`ll probably freeze to death come winter.

Which is the most enslaving technology?

I doubt this as technology has made it easier to communicate and practice social skills. When you see some 14 year old kid texting the friends this is a REAL social interaction...how could it not be? Not only that but he has the ability to socialize with multiple people at once anywhere he wants instead of being restricted to a home phone. Communication is by far limited to face to face interaction i mean. Take a look at people that aren`t as blessed as you....possibly blind, or def....or worse. These people communicate in different ways than you because they have to but i`m sure not once have they thought the alternate ways of communication they use wouldn`t be considered a REAL social interaction.

Maybe you are just speaking out of inner fear on what technology is turning you into...it was even hard for me to keep my mind on track with this as i have a new cell text and talking to 2 other people on pidgin....damn technology otherwise i prolly wouldn`t have even talked to these people today.

Technology has made the transfer of information easier, but that is the barest definition of `communicate` and certainly doesn`t help practice social skills. As you can easily witness by browsing even a few Spiked comment threads, and you can see in full swing by visiting 4chan, the ease of spreading ideas sometimes leads directly to a *reduction* in social skills.

Your argument regarding those who blind or de[a]f is not on point - `these people communicate in different ways than you because they HAVE TO`. People choosing text over voice, voice over face to face communication are making an active choice to remove themselves from a more intimate and intricate method of communicating, while those who are blind/deaf/otherwise limited in their ability to communicate are not able to make the choice. And while their communication may indeed be `real`, it is limited – as you already pointed out – and thus it can be argued that it is not as complete as the communication undertaken by those with full faculties.

Study after study shows the reduction in overall achievement by those who habitually multitask. One has to wonder, then, if it is more a fear of what you are turning into, as someone who attempts to create a cogent argument while distracted by text messages and instant messages. After all, by your own admission, it was hard for you to keep your mind on writing that reply. Barely 180 words and it was hard for you to think about one thing that long? YOU should also be worried about that.

"Inability to communicate in a real life social environment? Probably."

This is closer to reality than you`d like to imagine. Take a thorough read through this article, if you can spare the time.

The world is changing rapidly, that`s true. Makes me scared though, with knowledge comes great power. I don`t think there are any leaders that will use that power for good. We just need some alien invaders to teach us who`s boss.

I believe that Claymore is right.
We need an alien invasion (or maybe a robot uprising) to put all this into perspective.

Alien = We don`t know shit about shit.
Robot = The shit we do know will kill us.
