On a slightly different note, there are some rare cases of completely blind people that don`t know they`re blind. The eye-occipital lobe pathway passes through the temporal lobe and this is rewired in such a way that the occipital lobe still receives signals but not from the eyes. Funny thing about it is that most cases don`t really realize that they`re blind up until somebody convinces them of this.

There is a way to actually emulate these hallucinations. You need anything that can produce a constant static sound and can be attached to a pair of headphones (a portable radio with headphones attached is ideal), a red lamp, and some sort of eye cover that is opaque but semipermeable to light (a ping pong ball cut in half works well).

What you do is (make sure you`re seated or lying down):

Turn the red light on and face it towards you
Tape the two halves of the ping pon balls over your eyes
Turn the radio to a channel that has a constant static sound
Place the headphones in your ears and relax
After a certain period of time (it`s pretty person specific), you`ll start to hallucinate.

What happens is your brain becomes "used to" the constant sound and red light and inhibits the signals coming from your eyes and ears (similar to when you smell a certain scent for a prolonged period of time and begin to lose it). At this point, your brain begins to create signals of its own and translates them as if they were coming from your eyes and ears.

I haven`t tried this myself, but I hear it can be pretty intense.

If you are interested in this subject I recommend this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Supernatural-Meetings-Ancient-Teachers-Manki
nd/dp/1932857842

Its a very good read, he talks about the similarities between hallucinogenic drug visions, ancient cave paintings, religious visions and alien abductions.

Thats called the Ganzfeld experiment.

Parapsychologists have used this to induse a state where allegedly the mind becomes more open to telepathic messages.

"Parapsychologists such as Dean Radin and Daryl J. Bem say that ganzfeld experiments have yielded results that deviate from randomness to a significant degree, and that these results present some of the strongest quantifiable evidence for telepathy to date"

I commonly get a strange sensation just as I`m slipping into sleep where I consciously know that my eyes are shut, but I can "see" the blanket or pillow or whatever my eyes are pointed at.
It`s really weird, like looking through my eyelids.

Wow, thats pretty fascinating its pretty amazing that the brain keeps generating images even when the eyes stop working..
The brain is an amazing piece of flesh and fatty-acid.
