Girls Used Facebook For Help Call

ADELAIDE, Australia, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Australian authorities said two girls lost in a drainage well system used their phones to update their Facebook statuses instead of calling police.

Glenn Benham, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Fire Service in Adelaide, said the girls, ages 10 and 12, posted Facebook updates saying they were lost in a storm drain in the city's south suburbs and a friend who noticed the updates called police, Britain's The Daily Telegraph reported Tuesday.

The girls were rescued at 7:30 p.m. and did not require medical attention, emergency responders said.

"It is a worry for us because it causes a delay on us being able to rescue the girls," Benham told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. "If they were able to access Facebook from their mobile phones, they could have called 000 (the Australian emergency number), so the point being they could have called us directly and we could have got there quicker than relying on someone being online and replying to them and eventually having to call us via 000 anyway."

"If they were able to access Facebook from their mobile phones, they could have called 000"

Well...not necessarily. Could be they got a wifi signal, and no Phone signal.

Just sayin`.

Though if they did have access to a phone signal, then yes they were stupid.

Reil, for them to have access in wifi signal, in a storm water drain is pretty, unlikely. Secondly, for them to access FB, they must have strong signal from the carrier to access. As all mobile internet in Australia are mostly 3g based. Which is pretty notorious, when it comes to network reception.

And here is a tip. All mobile manufacturers design their phone, so it can used for emergency use at any condition. Even without a sim. So if your emergency number is 911 or 000. The mobile will automatically look for the most available network and send a sos. And even if the country doesn`t have any emergency number like 911, 000, etc there is a industry standard number, which 112. So grab your phone and dial 112, you will see your phone will most probably say "Attempting Emergency Call" or just "Emergency Call". Make sure you hang up straight away. Usually this call takes a few second delay before it dials, in case if someone used it accidentally. Also it looks for the strongest signal in the area. So next time you are in a emergency and their is no reception, dial 112. Very handy to know. And pass it to as many people as possible.
