at dunkerque the expeditionary force, retreating from the german advance were strafed and bombed on the beach while waiting for the fleet of ships, hastily assembled from anything capable of crossing the channel was coming to evac them. It was officialy "on" after that.

Sorry for the OT but when you mentioned:

"hastily assembled from anything capable of crossing the channel was coming to evac them"

I couldn`t help but to imagine the Top Gear crew in Jeremy Clarkson`s amphibious Toyota Hilux

Weird. 1547 aircraft lost and 544 Pilots killed. Wasn`t this back in the day ejection seats didn`t exist? Amazing so many pilots actually survived...

^ most of those pilots killed probably were either stuck in the cockpit due to a jammed hinge (through damage or, sadly, lack of maintenance - remember, the same Hurricane would have been flown by a few pilots working around the clock), were shot dead already, died of wounds on the way down, drowned in the Channel or hit the tail section on the way out.

Also, this was before highly explosive air-to-air missiles (where a near miss can still ruin your day). Ejector seats are necessary to clear the pilot from the blast - WWII-era planes spluttered and dove to the ground, generally. Sure, they`d burn on the way down and occasionally explode, but usually it was a looooong way down to a sudden stop.

And in a final note - there`s a reason they call the WWII generation the greatest generation, and the Battle of Britain is but one example. Respect your grandparents, and for some of our younger Spiker brothers and sisters, your great-grandparents - on all sides, Allies or Axis. They went through far more shit than we can possibly imagine in our `post-911 world of darkness`.

The German bombers were sitting ducks and the German fighters had extremely limited range. They could not afford to waste petrol dog fighting over Britain. In addition the fully fueled Spitfires were superior dog fighters. Basically, credit is due to the brave British pilots. The Germans were no slouches. But honestly, the Krauts did not have a chance over England.

If Hitler held off his advance into Russia and concentrated his forces on Britain, it would have been a slaughter. The Spitfire was created WHILE British towns were being bombed. So to say that the Germans didn`t have a chance over England seems pretty skewed. We were lucky on so many levels. The British even made mock versions of tanks to look as though they had much more force than they actually did. Lucky man.

^dead right joob. Hitler must have been paranoid and jealous of those Russian factory towns, if the SS had crossed the channel instead of going to Moscow... Also if the luftwaffe had concentrated on wiping out our airfields instead of switching to the cities, that would have fucked us too.
