Take this as a response to "Burning Saltwater for Fuel".

I noticed the "nice idea" near the end of this, that humanity has changed primary fuel sources before, so maybe we can do it again.

NOT LIKE THIS WE HAVEN`T.

You want to know THE CHALLENGE facing humanity over the next century, this is it. We solve it, or it`s post apocalyptic fun for the 1% of us who make it, my friends.

So I`d like to turn attention to the most recent experiment in fusion reactions, specifically the following quote:
"it will impart 500 trillion watts of power - more than the peak electrical generating power of the entire United States. "
I don`t really have much else to say really, other than that this is probably something we should put a little support into.
I mean seriously, you don`t need to have a physics degree to know 500 trillion watts is more than a whole shitload.

^ Est. Fusion power is humanity`s only hope, literally do or die. Something I have known and been saying for quite a few years now. So please, what is the source of that juicy quote you tease me with?

Even though 500TW sounds nice, whoever sat at the head of those wires would be king of us all. In contrast, 5 megawatts each from small size / low cost reactors would implicitly rewrite the face of human politics and history for good, by making any centralized control forever more impossible (YEAH!). I`m envisioning a mesh of cooperating co-ops, with no overseer but a constitution, bill of rights, each other, and a big fast internet.

And by the way, I hope that`s not 500TW for 1ps with a 24rh reload time?

we already have the technology to wean off of oil,
but as you may imagine it wouldn`t be nearly as profitable;
obviously the oil industry doesn`t want to become obsolete, and will likely do whatever it takes to preserve their monopoly--which may include suppressing the opposition and new technology.
SNAFU!

but they say necessity is the mother of invention..
i`m not so pessimistic as to think we can`t solve the problem

^ anoniem "we already have the technology to wean off of oil"

Which is what? What do we have to PRODUCE that much energy?

We currently PRODUCE 83% of our energy with fossil fuels. Only 17% by all other sources. The total is equivalent to 3 cubic miles of oil per year, 2.5 total from fossil fuels.

To replace that over the next 50 years we have to:

- build 5 new nukes every 2 weeks.
- build 3000 new wind turbines a week.
- install 625,000 1KW solar systems a day.

And that was assuming we didn`t increase our energy consumption, but we will.

That`s what it would take to replace our fossil fuel energy sources with the technology we currently have, to "wean off oil". It`s impossible to meet those quotas with ANY technology we currently have. We don`t even have enough steel, uranium, or extra energy to build all that stuff. That is why we are totally fucked.

That`s what the cubic mile really means. That is why conservation is the big buzz. If we actually had any real alternatives, then building them out as fast as we could would be the big job. It would be worth decommissioning armies for. It would be the only thing we could afford to do.
