9/11 Science & Conspiracy

Could the towers have been brought down by controlled demolition? Blasting a college dorm might help us answer that question. From National Geographic Aired 31st August 2009.

I have yet to hear a conspiracy theory that stands up to close scrutiny.

^ especially the one about fires taking down steel-framed skyscrapers.
thrice in a day (and for the first time in history) is quite a coincidence, wouldn`t ya say?

Not that it has any bearing on the message of the video, but I don`t think that the guy with the "shape charge weapon" knew what he was talking about (I know he`s a PHD & MIT professor of materials engineering but not explosives engineering) or he was making up an example with the only liner he had expecting nobody to call him on his bullshit. The copper liner aka lens is for an explosively formed penetrator, which could be considered a variation of shape charges, but its geometry would only allow projectiles (ball or kind of tear shaped), not jetting. For maximum penetration (efficient jet formation) liners need to have an angle of ~42° more like the linear shape charges they showed the demolition crew using whose liners would have a cross section looking more like this: /\, with explosives around the convex side causing the liner to collapse on its self and be forced out(down) in a jet down the middle as the explosive propagates down the "V".

His explanation of how the small explosives on the inside of the concave parts of the liner, makes the whole liner implode in a jet doesn`t make any sense to me. It seems to me that that the small explosives in the pits around the edge would blow holes around the liner that would cause shrapnel to fly in all directions and the center part would have little to no forward momentum.

I don`t have a PHD, but have taken graduate level explosive engineering classes, and regrettably have been involved in the R&D of shape charge and EFP weapons(don`t ever do it, the money`s good, you get to do exciting engineering, and blow shit up all day, but it kills your soul, you can blow stuff up for good causes, probably for less money though). From everything that I have studied and seen I am almost certain that the liner would have been backed evenly with a couple pounds(probably not less than one) of explosives evenly on the convex side usually contained in a metal cylinder to increase the effects of the explosive on the lens. I am certain that that liner would be used to form one large slug(aka projectile) and a cone of smaller slugs(one formed from each pit) shooting out in the concave direction.

I know it will be easier to believe an MIT professor than me, but I have seen specific examples in real life that would lead me to think that he is wrong. I`m pretty sure I can`t talk about any of those specific examples but I`ve also been thumbing over my copy of "Explosives Engineering" by Paul W. Cooper(who I`ve had the pleasure of talking to at a guest lecture) which is the explosives engineers go-to reference book and can`t find anything to make me feel differently.

^^The classic fire has never taken down slightly similarly constructed, smaller buildings that weren`t hit with hundred and fifty tonne planes argument. Now that`s proof.
