The Coconut Revolution (Part 1)

This is an incredible modern-day story of a native peoples` victory over Western globalization. Sick of seeing their environment ruined and their people exploited by the Panguna Mine, the Pacific island of Bougainville rose up against the giant mining corporation, Rio Tinto Zinc. The newly formed Bougainville Revolutionary Army began fighting with bows and arrows and sticks and stones against a heavily armed adversary. In an attempt to put down the rebellion the Papua New Guinean Army swiftly established a gunboat blockade around the island. But with no shipments allowed in or out, how did new electricity networks spring up on the island? And how were the people of Bougainville able to drive around the island without any source of petrol or diesel? Watch as the world`s first eco-revolution unfolds within the blockade. A David and Goliath story for the 21st century. A inspiring multi-award winning documentary.

Yes, really inspiring. It really makes me want to go there. Except for the unfortunate religion thing.

It`s almost like an experiment in a petri dish, take honestly primitive people, add Christianity (in a simple form), and I can see how that religion can add a measure of what we see as moral rectitude to their lives. It`s better than the ignorance they had before, it guides them towards compassion.

What`s sad is that there is not enough well developed atheist work at a really simple level to share with people like this. Christianity has enough myth in it to substitute for their original superstitious culture, but by that same token fails to supplant that superstition with more advanced logic and reasoning. I fear that the mumbo-jumbo suspicions, either in primitive or Christian flavors, manage to lead these good folks astray in many practical matters. How do you clearly and honestly assess whether real world health practices work when your head is filled with miracle thinking? How many of them will die while their well meaning and innocent, but ignorant and misguided doctor uses prayers instead of seeking a real solution? The prayers can do real harm where they stand in stead of real knowledge, and the margin for survival is so small.

Maybe I should move there and study them as an anthropologist and fellow free man. I could bring a shitload of good books, and start the education process towards modernity and atheism. Gently.

But they wouldn`t have high speed internet.

Thanks. That`s a nasty wound healed without a doctors help, probly hurts every time he flexes that arm. I hope someone sends these guys some money to help fight such a just cause, `cos you know with a mine in place they won`t get any "official" help.

watched the whole thing. They had some "healers" who healed everything.... They even say they might of cured an AIDs person, as well as numerous cancer victims. I will be the first to saw no, they didn`t.

It doesn`t matter what you feel, the cancer cells will still kill you. But they did figure out how to make a working fuel in place for diesel. Cheers for them.

Good for them, really. Fighting for something that really matters deeply for them. Fuck the Fascists.
If anyone watches the rest of the parts, its fascinating to see how much they do with so little; the sling-gun, the herbal booby traps and all the uses for coconuts?
I strongly suggest everyone watch this, its long, but really good.

For a law student who is writing his thesis on "Discrimination of indigenous peoples and the right to land", this documentary was extremely interesting.

For people who havent watched the whole thing: try to think of something along the line of
"Lost meets Fallout 3 meets Jesus Camp"

Coconuts ftw!

"The Roman Catholic Church, the, most powerful organization in Bougainville, officially announced its support for the breakaway move" - Wikipedia.

"The PNG army received military aid from Australia and enlisted the support of Sandline International, a private military company." - Wikipedia.

So they were supported by Christians and helped by mercenaries. I`m not saying they were not justified in there actions, there land there way, but it would appear that two things which you Liberals here HATE actually supported something you support. The line between right and left is not always so clear, ugh?

you`re talking about 2 different sides. The catholics are helping the rebels and the mercenaries are with papau new guinea, who the rebels are fighting. Therefore, the slaughter is only made longer and worse due to support from the catholics and mercenaries

PNG army = Papua New Guinea army

You might want to watch it again because Bougainville didn`t receive military aid, it was PNG. And I dont think Liberals here hate Christians, it`s the politicians who uses Christianity as a means of forwarding their agenda. Religion and Politics should NEVER mix.
