Atheist Life vs Religious Life

Some argue that religious life is the best way to live. They claim life without a god is sad and depressing.

Nobody is coerced into atheism, and the means by which people pick it up vary.

You see, I became an atheist after finding out how the Bible mandated raped women to be treated. In fact, read that lovely section while attending a talk in church.

And then I found out about Lilith and the mythos surrounding her, and that the "Genesis" story wasn`t cut and dry. I dug a lot deeper, and found out how chopped up the Genesis story was at all. Furthermore, I came to find out that the Bible was put together by a bunch of guys on a `yay` or `nay` basis. Oh, and that the Apocrypha consists of the "Honorable Mentions".

Then I realized none of the Christian doctrines agreed with each other, and each one thinks they`re the right one. Not only that, but since ancient times Christianity has been split in half (Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Christians of the East, represent!) Furthermore, the Christian factions are part of a larger Judeo-Islamic-Chistian threesome in which all of them think themselves the proper one. Oh! And then you have all the OTHER religions on the planet.

And then I got down to the nitty gritty. I hear about people speaking of answered prayers. But I can`t help but think of the millions of unanswered ones. You know, people getting killed, dying, etc.

And then it hit me.

Religion? That`s people making shit up all along! Instead of thinking of a good reason to behave, they say "do it or you`ll be punished!" And with the history of Christianity, you can just make shit up as you go!

Unhappy with the Council of Nicea? Fuck, establish an Eastern Christianity! Unhappy monk? Tell the Catholic Church to piss off and make your own version! Seeing visions of angels and gold, plate books? Become a Mormon!

Why not! Pick your pleasure! Either way, with everyone thinking they`re right and nobody agreeing on who Jesus likes best (aw, sounds so adult like huh?), you got millions of enemies!

Pat Condell points it out quite nicely. I can`t even believe in -nothing-. In fact, trying to take the neutral side has me being an infidel or horrible sinner. So there`s some constantly changing, unstable organization praying to a made up Father figure chastising me because I want to discover what being a good person is like without `em?

And you -wonder why we`re so indignant and irate-?

^ Red Heaven, very well said. It`s nice to read about someone learning to see through the vast sphere of religious nonsense, and gaining their own strength and independance.

I have been an atheist for ever, I grew up in a completely non religious family, and just learned good common sense, logic, and science, instead of all that religious stuff. I can honestly say I`ve been open to listening, but none of it has ever made even half as much sense as the answers you get from just applying unbiased logic and scientific learning. Specifically, it`s always been my observation that religeous ideas conflict with both my observations and logic. I know which way I choose.

I put it like this: wherever there is a religious answer or idea that addresses some concept, there is a non-religious answer or idea that simply makes more sense, ie. it`s based on observation and logic instead of faith and/or some old religious book. And where there isn`t a non-religious answer, at least there is an HONEST "we don`t know" that accurately guides our explorations going forward.

So why even entertain religion at all when you can do EVERY BIT AS WELL without it?

The really sinister thing I have come to see about religion: it seems that the true underlying function of religion is about cementing human dominance / submission hierarchies in society, essentially into cults (used loosely). The religious teachings have to be somewhat non-sensical, judgemental, and divisive. What happens is that people have to demonstrate faith in submitting to the ideas, and in doing so demonstrate their subservience to the authority structure in place. Also this causes some alienation from other groups who do not submit to that particular version of religious ideas. So the followers are drawn more together by their isolating shared beliefs. This is also strongly reinforced by the judgemental nature of the ideas, because it makes "us" seem better than "them".

I have never liked religion at all, for all those reasons and more. It seems like a tragedy of failure to our real and crucial understanding of things, a hinderance to be overcome. I see people doing better without it in every way I have noticed.

To all of you who might say "but religion helps alot of people": yes, even some flawed knowledge can be better than real ignorance. But there is better understanding to be had than what religion offers, and ignorant people would do better with it than religion. The religious help comes with too much nonsense, and too many shackles on a person`s deeper freedom.

I grew up in a very christian household and had devout belief in god, which waned as I got older. I went to a christian high school and took a religion class all four years, and that`s how I lost my faith. Junior year we focused on scripture, and the horrors and contradictions I uncovered prompted me to read the entire bible rather than just the select readings we did in class.

I`m an atheist now and like everything already stated above me I`ve come to find that life follows logic, science, and experience rather than thousand year old teachings. It bothers me when I hear a US senator say that the earth is 6,000 years old. It bothers me when christians use the bible to show that the world is going to end in 2012 (it isn`t). I`m not sold on Obama, but can people please stop saying he`s the antichrist? Can people stop writing off the ignorance of people as god`s retribution?

Religion isn`t entirely bad; it`s responsible for millions of hours and dollars of community service and aid (thing is this same effort should be given even if it isn`t in the name of god). The problem is how people use it as a crutch that in the end prevents free thought and action. It`s a problem when people think I`m an immoral hedonist because I don`t believe there`s a man in the sky watching my every move.

alifeva1, no one coerced me into becoming an atheist; I listened to so many lectures, read so many articles, I know christianity better than 99% of practicing christians. I`m aware, that`s all.

Religion normally spreads through childhood indoctrination, alifeva. That`s really just a form of coercion. Atheism on the other hand, seems to be the default, at least it was for me and many others who actually grew up with a choice. The fact that my family had more than one religion and that school taught us about all the world religions meant that I was never "coerced" into any one religion like so many kids are. People tried, but I was too well exposed to the overlapping layers of blindness and hypocrisy, and like many others already pointed out, this just made science even more appealing.

I don`t like how you imply that people are atheists because their lives are easy when yours is not. Its just a weak argument and another way to attack character. Again, it just shows that religion and your military fetish are both just comfort zones for you. You`re so desperate to be part of a group, and religion is an emotional and sentimental choice for you, not a logical one. But then, it almost always is emotional appeal, its not like religion ever requires you to actively think.

Dang I was drunk last night. Most of my post was a rap song I was listening to...

Well thats funny because I was to say the same of atheism, barack obama bumper stickers, and this website. What is this a prepared response? as you might have missed my take on emotion as ego fuel and my rants about women and material objects and substance abuse as ego stroking.

I don`t remember how many times I have said on this website that I haven`t been to church in almost a decade or part of any religious social gathering. I hadn`t been to the dentist in about 5 years until the other day. So your response is indirect and it just applies to anyone init? To: anyone..You think you have the world figured out but really you haven`t even scratched the surface. You can`t even find a decent gal.

You see what I did with that last sentence? I took an opinion based on no bulk evidence at all not even the slightest and I made it into a statement as if it were to be taken factually.

I can very well assimilate science into my faith with God. But that seems a rather heavy task for you. Hm, yes. And while you are good at people pleasing these undermined individuals on this website you are only leading them to a life of laziness, excuses, and a pitiful demise. What are the provisions? You offer self preservation and freedom of the mind. But really your confining ones mind into another way of life and thinking.

I understand you feel in control you have this outer shell as if you were driving your car. your car becomes an embodiment of you. You feel strong. You feel powerful. But what happens when you step out of that car? Just a small puny man. It`s a big world out there. And the ocean, wow, really big.

I tell you what. Find out for me if Ray Mears believes in God or if he is an atheist. If Ray Mears is an atheist I will consider it.

You might as well speak of the necessities of incorporating ice cream sundaes into learning Russian.

Sure, eating ice cream sundaes may make learning Russian more pleasant for you. However, I would also kindly point out that ice cream sundaes aren`t necessary to learn Russian either.

No difference between atheism and religion, both take an absolute position that either God exists or doesn`t, two sides of the same coin.

^^^^ It`s funny how everything you`ve said about atheists pretty much describes a person like you. Everything seems very prejudiced and stereotyped by your terms and description. Ironic imo.

All of us have fears over the uncertain and unexplained. Being open to every possibility is not a bad thing.

xupz: WRONG!

I know that atheism means a lack of belief in god, but that shouldn`t seem any more radical or absolutist than a lack of belief in unicorns. You only see it differently because you have been conditioned to think that gods are in some way more probable than all other myths and superstitions dreamt up through the ages. Most atheists will openly admit that they are not 100% certain that gods, hobbits and time travelling sorceresses don`t exist. We don`t have to be, the burden of proof is on the mushy minded believer.

Having said that; the South Park episode on religion and atheism was badass, I don`t hate you for basing your misinformed opinions on it.

The video covers a lot of what some people are saying.

If you can prove in a reproducible manner under reasonable guide lines that there is a god. I will change my mind. If you could ever do this you could convert many people. But evidence suggests very strongly that there is no such god of any form.

And I`ll say this preemptively, The lack of evidence for something doesn`t show that something can be there but we haven`t seen it. It shows that it isn`t there or you would be able to show it through experiments and tests.

^Thats quite stupid cause if it were scientifically proven there is a god then it wouldn`t be about faith anymore.

IMHO religion is about caring about what you do, and not being an asshole to others, justified by the belief that all our actions have consequences beyond this life. You do bad shit, bad shit will wait for you after life. You be a good dog, you`ll get your treat.

Of course there are non-religious people who are good, and there are religious people who are veritable jerks. As with most things in life, there are people who like to read the manual, and people who just take the plunge.

There are different degress of responsability in both extremes.
