@ the poster:

1. The "closing speed" is NOT 120 mph, the IMPACT (or damage if you wish) to either car is the same as if you crash it with the same offset against a concrete pillar at 60mph (assuming that the mass of both cars is equal, which in this case it seems to be near enough). You can visualise it this way: think of two cars crashing either side into a VERY thick wall at 60mph ->!!!!!<-, now you reduce the thickness of this wall by half and repeat the crash test until the thickness is no more measurable ->!<- then: -><- the damage to either car will always be the same!

2. The TOTAL ENERGY absorbed is equal to ONE car crashing into a concrete pillar @ 120mph (again assuming that the mass of both cars is equal), however, as two cars are involved this energy is devided equally between the two.

This changes dramatically if one of the cars is heavier than the other (say VW Beetle vs Mercedes S-Class) as each car still has to absorb the same amount of energy the damage to the VW will be a lot higher than when you crash it against a concrete pillar at the same speed, the opposite is true for the Merc.
