I wish that more people would listen to people like Jacque Fresco. We would all greatly benefit technically and to some degree socially from that kind of thinking. At the same time I still feel that we all need to develop "spiritually" (for lack of a better word) in order to become responsible human beings. The fact is that if we do not change the way we are doing things right now, evolution is going to force us out of existence eventually.
The answer is elegantly simple really - we are all one.
I cannot live a full life without everything else on the planet working in perfect symbiosis - the way it was designed.
It may sound like some New-Age Hippie clichê but that still doesn`t make it any less valid.

Okay, I`m going to try to be as reasonable as possible on this:

As someone who was born and raised in the Third World, and now live in the First, I`ve experienced and understood the problems both have. This futurist guy, regardless of how bright he is at what he does, lives in his own fantasy world.

Before you can even think of having a future like that, you need to understand and solve the CURRENT problems of society, if that`s even possible. This guy goes from point A, gives point B a big fuck you, and jumps all the way to point Z without any idea how to get there. You can`t go into space without even designing a means to get off the ground after all.

What really bothers me is the idea that if you make buildings pretty and have a plethora of advance technology around it, life will magically be better, and we will be a super race of enlightened beings. I believe technology is what helped produced so many lonesome internet addicts, idiots driving while on cellphones, and an alienating consumerism culture. I`m not anti-technology, but feel it should be used more responsibly and technology alone will not solve all our problems.

The comments from this link highlight what a lot of users on this site (note: "game addicts") feel. I agree, the world is fucked up, so we should deal it with now instead of hiding from it, and no amount of futuristic utopian thinking is going to help us.

i wanna know this: Why is architecture so rounded in the future?
are jagged edges and corners a thing of the past?

As with most industrial designers most of the "best" designs are stupidly inefficient if not plain unfeasible.

whether or not you agree with him, or think hes a nut job, hes right in one case, we have to change society, the way we are going, this world wont last

Society changes on it`s own over time, and usually for the better thanks to human innovation. Look at the difference between now and say 100 years ago. There will always be bad aspects of society because we are humans and no system that we come up with can be perfect. I think that we are living in one of the best societies in human history right now. Longer life expectancies than ever before; less war than ever before, more freedoms than ever before. sure it can be better, but name one time before now that you would rather be living in. Unless there is a drastic change in politics or some sort of a disaster that forces change, I think that we have it pretty good in the developed world. I just wish that more people cared about the underdeveloped countries in the world.

If you really want to improve the future cut down on the number of people, no amount of floating cities will save us when population exceeds the means of food production. A world of limitless resources is unfeasible and as long as resources are limited there will be war for those resources when they are scarce. Most major problems can be traced back to overpopulation anyway, world hunger, global warming, health care crisis. But no one will handle the problem of overpopulation because that would be direct control over human life and we would let the earth die off before we let that happen.

His ideas are nice, and his life story is very interesting. However very few if any of the ideas are feasible and if not feasible are not exactly cost efficient or for a lack of a better word useful. Each one of those floating cities would cost millions if not billions to build and would cost just as much to maintain, supply and just keep track of. While it would be much cheaper, cost effective, and smarter to just tear down and renovate places like the deserted ghettos in Detroit.

and @ ThePot

All things like war and quality of life are dependent on region not just time period, just look at some of those underprivileged countries. At one time China was the land of plenty and was the destination for knowledge, the Middle East one of the worlds greatest trading ports and Mexico City home to the most powerful and prosperous kingdoms on earth. Our generation is no different than those before us, each region has it`s goods and bads and statistically life expectancy is starting to decline, at least in the western world.

^^Yup yup. A significant portion of problems does stem from overpopulation. It happens everywhere, regardless of whether the country is rich or poor. Although in rich countries, it is usually due to immigrant population explosions. Native populations, especially that of Europe, have almost zero population growth and some of those native populations are even declining.

Unless there is a stop to this overpopulation problem, humanity is bound to suffer a great crisis. Nothing else really matters as much as this. No social problem is as dire as this. Even if all countries achieved world peace and turned into First World democracies by tomorrow, that would not matter for shit. In fact, it might make it worst because of the massive resource consumption and pollution attributed to First World countries.

If you guys like him you might want to check out Pablo Soleri! He proposes the concept or archology, the merging of architecture and ecology to create a sustainable civilization, the reamergence of a the communtiy and so on. Most of his designs consist of a super building which would entail all of the cities housing, industrial, commercial, transportation, and municipal needs. Check him out!

This guy is pretty cool, and his ideas are amazing, but since world peace would be NEEDED, it will never happen. Among countless other things, something that will keep people fighting is the debate over religions or no religion. AND SO, I think someone should tackle a Jetsons remake and have this guy be the artistic director.

As an inventor myself I really like Jaques way of thinking, I think he`s awesome, but,

I noticed by part 6 of this doco that his cities have huge manicured gardens all through them, but at the same time he wants to elimate the mundane and boring jobs? I doubt he can design a robot that can maintain these gardens, so I expect a shanty town full of "gardners" to develop on the border of these "advanced cities".
