The Frozen North

Richard Louis "Dick" Proenneke (May 4, 1916–April 28, 2003) was a naturalist and survivalist who lived alone in the high mountains of Alaska at a place called Twin Lakes. Living in a log cabin he constructed by hand, Proenneke made valuable recordings of both meteorological and natural data.

Well at least he lived in Twin Lakes, not Twin Peaks. Weird shit happens there.

And very cool. I`m a bit of a survivalist nut and I`ve made miniatures of these colonial era log cabins, but never tried it on full scale. Would be great if I could spare the time to give it a shot for real. I`m no architect but it is remarkably simple, although it would definitely require some serious muscle power and some finesse with tools. Tough ol` codger, inne?

Anyone interested in this kind of stuff should check out the plethora of Survivalist literature out there. I`m a fan of Cody Lundin, myself. He`s interested purely in survival, and doesn`t pander to any particular political ideology - I`m not such a fan of the James Wesley Rawles-school out there though. Whilst JWR works, from an informational point of view, are useful - I always find the focus to be far more upon blowing other people up!

Y`see, a dude like Lundin, or this gent Proenneke here, are more concerned with things like shelter, food, and water - the nuts and bolts of keeping people alive - the JWRs and even, dare I say it, Mel Tappans, out there are more interested in making other people dead as an insurance policy.

But anyway, if you`re interested, check out - as a starter - "When All Hell Breaks Loose" by Cody Lundin (good informational primer on all sorts of shit - and very entertaining too). James Wesley Rawles` "Patriots" as well is a good read if you`re inclined to survivalist "what-if" scenarios - although you may, like me, find his moral footing to be decidedly unbalanced. Not too many "Christians" out there would condone quite so much firepower. 300,000 rounds of ammunition? Ha ... WWJD, eh?

I prefer survivalists that avoid the political mumbo-jumbo and focus on surviving, and protecting yourself and your `tribe` - not fighting a guerrilla war. Time to go watch the rest of the doco. Thanks for the link, billabongcocker. (helluva name there, mate)

I dunno if anybody has noticed but texas ranger just likes to spark anger so just ignore him, and the admins will get rid of him like ryan a couple of years ago.

I saw this guy`s documentary on PBS. It really appealed to me. I would love to do it in order to distance myself from a society overrun with people like TeXaN-RaNgEr-32.

Peace with nature. Fuck people.
