The believe something had to "start" somewhere is a mostly Western one.

There`s quite a few other... hypotheses about the nature of our reality. I believe my favorite is the cyclical version. There is no beginning and end... just the cycle.

Death and rebirth. I`ve been chewing on that idea for a very long time. Pretty hard to break out of the baked-in philosophies we`ve been handed by our culture.

The belief in god is a comfort. At its base, the reason people believe in any god is because it is more comfortable to them that there is someone or something in control out there, that the universe isn`t a chaotic series of interacting explosions, that on some level we still retain a modicum of control in the universe. The belief in god stems from man`s internal coping mechanisms. Some of us need that extra security of an eternal father(or mother) figure.
Creationism is the modern rationalization for these people who need to believe in god, but also feel threatened by modern science and philosophy. They`ve come to realize that like any social institutions over time, their influence is slipping and in order to preserve their way of life, they came up with creationism as a way to present theism to an ever skeptic new world.

I`m getting so tired of all these commenters who get on Spiked and try to throw mud around and act like they are so superiour to anyone who fits on the above flow chart. You don`t have any particular beliefs? Great, keep your snide, arrogant comments to yourself and stop trying to tell me what to think or believe. Ex. "I can`t believe that with todays science and logic that any fool still believes in some magical idea of this, that or anything else." Who are you to think you have any more answers than the last guy who said the same thing? Or that you out of all the people who have come before you know the best way to live life? If I choose to have beliefs, then I will no matter what you say, so keep it to yourself unless who have something constructive to add.

Whew, I forgot what I was going to say after I got into the flow chart. Oh well, the above being said and true. I loved this episode of Family Guy, I seriously laughed so hard that my cat who was sleeping on my stomach actually bounced up into the air a little and scratched me on the way down.
