Shit Happens in Shishou, China

Well, where to start this -- thousands, some even estimated up to 70 thousands, of people gathered around a Hotel in Shishou, Hubei province, China to shield off the police's attempts to snatch the body of a suspicious "suicide" to be cremated. You can search news with "shishou" to get a rough description of the situation. For pictures, here: http://www.bullogger.com/blogs/wangchuan2008/archives/301395.aspx (it's in Chinese, but no matter) The face-off is still going on, but now with more than 10,000 armed police and supposedly some "vehicles" entering the city... well, I don't know what happens next.

Well .. I`d like to take the high ground but I`m afraid I`d be executed for my trouble. Don`t fear it .. you`ll all speak Chinese soon enough.

On June 17, Xu Yuangao, a 24-year-old chef, was found dead at the Yonglong Hotel in the city of Shishou, and while the police say they found a suicide note, Xu`s family continue to allege foul play.

Another resident said that local people were suspicious because of another incident that took place at the hotel several years ago.

"Yonglong Hotel doesn`t have a good reputation because of its connections with the government and the death of a girl there a few years ago," she said.

She added that "around 10,000 people" have taken part in the protests, most of them local farmers angered by the way the case has been handled.

According to a short statement posted on the website of the Shishou city government, the police have kept in touch with Xu`s family to arrange an autopsy and confirm the cause of death, but the family refused.

"A large number of uninformed people set up a roadblock at East Yueshan Road and Oriental Avenue in Shishou, disrupting traffic and creating a disturbance," the statement said.

Chinese sociologists have described the spate of riots and protests in the country`s deprived hinterlands as "anger-venting social incidents" brought about by years of hardship and inequality.

As far as I`m unwilling to post politically biased reports, it seems that any related stuff in Chinese websites, even those that have servers in foreign countries and are already banned, are being removed with no certain patterns. My university bbs has also been harmonized...
For pictures, see the epochtimes page:

This is a much better and more updated version (but with fewer pictures) than the Reuters one:

Admin, if any of you sees this reply, would you kindly edit these two links into the submission description? That old link has been filtered and no longer has pictures.

Update:

Although most websites, forums and blogs are banned or regulated, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter, Fanfou, is still strong. -- Search has been filtered though. Twitter is still better choice.
From what I`ve seen (please be noted that I can`t confirm any of these, and have to reach my own conclusion with conflicting reports):

20,000 to 30,000 people stayed up to at least 4 o`clock last night.
In the night there are no big clashes between the police and the crowds.
Half past 3 am police cars (two dozens on Zhongshan rd.) tried to move in to the spot but the roads were blocked by crowds. The cars turned around after twenty or thirty minutes.
There had been attempts by the police to take the body but they didn`t succeed at least until 4 am.
Most police are stationed 2 kms away from the hotel. They blocked the road in and only allow people out since 3am.
*** 4.45 am, large group of armed police poured in and the body is taken. 30,000 police vs 20,000 common people... There wasn`t resistence. ***
No clashes between the police and the crowds...but there were people injured in the process.

Official source says that Tu`s family agreed to cremate the body after numerous negotiations. An autopsy will be performed before the cremation.

I will bring more if possible.

Hooh I can see now a few decades down the line what the Chinese will do to the US when they finally foreclose on the debts of the US. Nya ha. The US currently owes China more than $750 billion and growing. They are using that credit to buy different kinds of business in the US so pretty soon they are going to own everything and then all americans would soon be working for them. So keep spending away with your credit card folks and keep adding to your national debt soon the US will be called the United States Of America Property Of China.
