The National Ignition Facility

They have built what we like to call a "LASER " to try and create fusion.

neat.

I hope it works, so we can power our first interstellar drive with it.

Keep up the good work guys. If this works it could really turn things around for the better.

Some may be worried it would be used for weapons. But consider the possibilities of reliable, easily sustainable energy :) How much does "power" filter into "money" because of fuel issues? What is limited by power?

Not only that, but imagine the impact on the environment as nuclear waste is gone, coal plants go silent, and needless pollutants are halted from entering the environment further.

C`mon guys, you can do it. Make a difference!

pew pew pew lasers, cool! but... id be more interested in seeing ideas on how to harness that kind of energy into practical means.

So far I do see this more useful for military and physics purposes.

^How is a nearly unlimited source of energy -not practical-?

That`s practically the fucking -definition- of practical. Hell, here I go writing a post about how this machine can further means of global peace and you say -that-?

There is not an insult in the English language to subscribe to the sheer ignorance and short-sightedness of both you and your statement.

i`m pretty sure they built reactors like this before. or maybe i read about it years ago as a proposal? and they couldn`t get more energy out than they put in. is this reactor going to be different than the ones that didn`t work?

This place is about a Hour from my house... Every time they power it on, Our neighborhood looses all of its power, and the ambient temperature outside rises by about 300 degree`s..

Shit burns so bad..

Aside from the environmental and monetary benefits, think about this...

Modern wars are fought over resources (actual or potential). By releasing unlimited energy to everyone, a lot of global conflicts would dry up.

And on that note, once we get rid of oil/energy as a source of conflict, the water wars will begin.

I Wasn`t saying "Unlimited energy" isn`t practical. Enlighten my sheer ignorance on how you would turn a man made supernova into a global "Practical" as in USABLE energy source that would lead to... lol "Global Peace" instead of devising a way to place that supernova in a foreign country you are not so fond of?

Its not that I wouldn`t like seeing what you described, its just this video leaves those questions unanswered and so do you, yet tell me how ignorant and short-sighted I am >.>

I mean your statement seems more ignorant to me, Solar power is a nearly unlimited energy source, why isn`t it used for everything? Its because other fuel sources are currently more practical

hotter than the core of the sun? Holy shit thats hot.. if it melts down we`re all fucked. But its a great idea, and will be really helpful for clean energy.

Although he was voted down for it, marine255 does bring a valid point to the table. Even if we can kick off the reaction in a safe and controlled manner, we still have the issue of making the energy usable to solve. Even traditional fusion power plants generate power by using the fuel rods to boil the water to produce steam to turn a turbine which is attached to the mains grid.

It`s a step in the right direction, but we`re still a long way off... unfortunately.

-yeah... but not if this energy is made in one place.
