Abiogenesis - The Origins of Life

This has been CONFIRMED in Dr. Szostak`s LAB!!

It`s been 55 years since the Miller-Urey Experiment, and science has made enormous progress on solving the origin of life. This video summarizes one of the best leading models. Yes there are others. Science may never know exactly how life DID start, but we will know many ways how life COULD start. Don`t be fooled by creationist arguments as even a minimal understanding of biology and chemistry is enough to realize they have no clue what they are talking about.

Note on how competition works. Water will flow across a membrane to try to equalize the ion concentration. If there is a lot of polymer in a vesicle it will be surrounded by many ions, thus causing water to flow into the vesicle, increasing the internal pressure and stretching the membrane. Fatty acids are in equilibrium between the vesicle and solution. If 2 vesicles are near one another they will gradually swap fatty acids. If one membrane is under tension, the fatty acid "on rate" will be greater than the "off rate" (move to a lower energy state by relaxing the pressure). It will suck up fatty acids from solution. The other vesicle will still give them off, but they will disappear (sucked up by neighbor) and not return. Therefore, the vesicle with high internal pressure will grow and the neighbor will shrink.

Very cool....but now I feel like I have to take more chemistry courses...

The cool thing is, if you want to find out more. You can find many supporting theory and repeatable experiments. Unlike the holy book that you just have to take their word for it, and all holy book is written by men, to serve their means.

When it comes to creationists i simply tell them to blow me and say the white stuff that comes out at the end is pure science hehe..

Science fuckin rules. I`m really glad i took a chem class so i know what most of these things are.. When it said "Now this is where it gets cool" i almost shat myself (was already very interesting)

-but one thing, this won`t stop creationists, they will ask "So where did those Organic Molecules come from?" bastards. If anyone had read `1984` they will understand that the creationists stand by the whole "Ignorance is Strength" ideal.

This was a blast to watch, I am in school to be a Biomedical engineer, and up to a yea and a half ago, all of this would have been jibberish! But I totally understand it all. I find it fascinating at which the exponential growth, life can undergo. Truth is, early cells and microbes were about a billion times simpler then the cells that we are made of today, but yea really cool stuff. From simple chemistry to incredibly complex organisms capable of anything... Hmmm interesting to think about.

Very interesting watch, thanks Selfworm. I would really like to watch the other videos related to this one hinted to by the menu at the beginning.

I`ve heard this before but never seen it explained so well and in near-laymens terms. The cool thing about this, not directly stated, is that a generation of growth (couldn`t think of a better word for it) could be mere seconds or less. In-fact, these rates of absorption, expansion and splitting could probably be calculated with relative ease. To think, in a single day (about 10hrs) 3.5 billion years ago, a species (Again, lack of vernacular) could evolve(ugh) and die out.

Its simplicity is amazing, almost elegant. I can`t wait to see the results of long-term experimentation.

So how many of those steps have been observed to follow each other in that order? I wish they would have given more attention to the origin of proteins.

The video mentioned that monomers could randomly polymerize but what`s the probability these polymers would have given rise to replicable genetic information if early genomes held no information? Out of curiosity, how conducive were the conditions of the ocean at this time to this process? How much of a factor was the ocean`s pH b/c the video mentions that vesicles only form in a certain pH range. Good to see they addressed temperature. I would have thought at boiling, proteins would be denatured but archeabacteria have been observed to live in hot springs and other extreme conditions. So life at such conditions is certainly possible

Enigma90, what`s wrong with asking questions? Science thrives on inquiry. Don`t be afraid of questions.

Nice one, really interesting fact is that there one creationist comments yet and i dont think there is anything else to say after this ...
