Roughly translated it means "guidesman". "führen" is a verb and would mean "to guide"...führer is the guider or guidesman.

^ Considering that uniforms do not necessarily have anything to do with the agenda behind a war - yeah, I agree. They were badass, especially including that awesome leather coat.
*sighs* Now look at the German uniforms today - it`s a disgrace. They look like they`re actually just a traditional shooting association.
