Haha this has to be the most over played scream ever. Its even in starcraft, thats how I first started noticing it in movies, always saying "Hey thats the scream from starcraft?!"

The first time I heard that scream was in Dark Forces in the mid 90`s when you made ur character accidentally fall in pits and air vents. I also remember a radio station played it on their little jingle. That`s old school.

originally recorded in 1951. the name "Wilhelm" comes from a minor character in the movie distant drums. The sound has become cliche` and is now a tradition amongst sound producers. Most noticeably the sound was used in star wars IV: a new hope, in which a storm trooper is shot and fly`s over an edge. This is the first movie since distant drums that the scream is used.

It is also in Star Craft when you click on one of the Terran buildings. It has something else mixed over it but its all the same
